FIFA World Cup 2026

The Dream That Was Stopped at the Door
Omar Abdulkadir Artan was Somalia's only referee selected among FIFA's 52 handpicked officials for the 2026 World Cup
and he was on the verge of making history as the first-ever Somali referee at a FIFA World Cup.
He flew from Istanbul to Miami International Airport, full of hope and excitement. But U.S. Customs and Border Protection stopped him cold. After additional inspection, he was declared "inadmissible due to vetting concerns" and denied entry into the country.
A U.S. official cited his alleged "association with suspected members of terror organizations." Somalia is among nearly 40 countries under the Trump administration's travel ban.
FIFA confirmed Artan "will be unable to train and officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026" and noted it has no role in host country immigration decisions.
Heartbroken, Artan boarded a flight back to Mogadishu. But what awaited him there was extraordinary:
Thousands of people packed into a stadium — not for a football match, but to celebrate the referee. Government officials welcomed him with flowers, fans wrapped him in Somalia's sky-blue flag, and he was hoisted onto shoulders as a symbol of national pride in a country often disparaged on the world stage.
FIFA announced he will be paid in full, and he has since been appointed to officiate the UEFA Super Cup Final between PSG and Aston Villa in Austria in August.
💬 A story of politics, football, and the unbreakable human spirit — Omar Artan didn't get to blow his whistle at the World Cup, but he became a hero to an entire nation.
