At least 12 people have been killed and 20 injured, including two children, in overnight Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine's capital Kyiv and the wider region, officials say.

Six of the casualties were railway workers of the state Ukrzaliznytsia company after a depot was hit in Kyiv.

Russia said its "massive strike using high-precision weapons" targeted Ukraine's military and energy facilities, and added that one person was also killed in Ukrainian strikes on Russia's western Belgorod region.

This comes a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin was urged by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a close ally, to end the war.

Authorities in the Thai resort city of Pattaya have stepped up security as they prepare to welcome thousands of sailors and marines from the USS Abraham Lincoln who have spent more than 270 consecutive days at sea.

“About 600 officials will provide security and other necessary assistance,” the provincial governor, Narit Niramaiwong, told AFP.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier sailed past Singapore over the weekend on its way back to the US after a lengthy deployment in the Middle East as part of the US war against Iran.

It left California in November 2025 for duty in the South China Sea and was rerouted to the Middle East before the US-Israeli attacks on Iran that began six months ago.

Most are now being forced to return as these two neighbours crack down on undocumented migrants. VLADIVOSTOK, Russia, Sept 1 - Russia on Tuesday condemned upcoming joint military exercises between Japan, Australia and the United States and said it had formally complained to Tokyo about the ​deployment of U.S. Typhon missile launchers for the drills, something it said posed a ‌threat to its own national security.
The "Orient Shield" drills are due to run from September 8-24 in Japan and, according to Japan's Kyodo News, will involve 3,700 personnel from the three countries, making the exercise the biggest of ​its kind yet. The drills will for the first time also involve U.S. Typhon ​mid-range missile systems which can launch SM-6 and Tomahawk cruise missiles.

KYIV, Aug 31 - Russian drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and the surrounding region stretched into ​the fifth day on Monday, with near round-the-clock air raid sirens disrupting daily life for millions.

Rescue teams are working to reach more than 900 people thought to be trapped in the tunnels and underground areas of half a dozen hydropower projects in Nepal following the devastating flash floods, ​the ⁠country’s disaster ​management authority said ​on ​Monday.

The death toll from the ⁠unprecedented deluge of ice, rock, mud ​and debris that crashed through valleys of Nepal on Wednesday last week has now risen to 903 people, with 16 more dead reported on the Tibet side of the border. More than 4,000 are missing in Nepal, with another 500 in Tibet.

Donald Trump announced Friday a new US oil agreement with Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez, saying the US will have “majority” control of 65bn barrels of proven oil reserves.

The terms of the agreement remain to be seen, but the US president said on his social-media platform that it had been brokered “through a partnership with ⁠private business” by his secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and defense secretary, Pete Hegseth.

The administration, Trump wrote, has “secured majority U.S. control of more ​than 65 BILLION ‌BARRELS of proven Oil ‌Reserves in Venezuela, at no cost to the ‌American Taxpayer”.

Trump said the agreement would more than double American oil reserves.

“This deal is a huge win for both the American and Venezuelan people,” Rubio wrote on social media.
