A happy independence day to everyone. This year, the treat of celebration is double because we won not just a battle of war skills and firepower but primarily a war of mind and psyche. For many years we had accepted the fate of being an inferior to Indian might and it reflected in our response to Indian bullying internationally. But at last we have our psychological stick back in our hands like the way it used to be back in 90s. It is actually time to celebrate and cherish what we achieved.
However it is also a moment to reflect on where we are heading. Out on the roads today, what we experience is a total disappointment of values and norms. It was not always this messy and culturally disastrous. We, the inhabitants of Lahore city, were used to celebrating big events in a befitting way that it deserved. Just today i was having this discussion with my father about celebrations of Basant and Data Gunj Bakhsh Urs. Before it became commercialized, these two events were the biggest source of entertainment and celebrations for city dwellers. Families used to participate and enjoy without hesitation. My father lived across Data Darbar at Bhati Gate and had seen all those celebrations. There never used to be any chaos or hooliganism and events were enjoyed by all and sundry. Like my father says, todays generation has lost the plot all together and in the name of freedom and freedom of speech we have embarked on a path that is bullying out any character that asks for a bit of decency in our behaviors. Our new generation just does not know how to celebrate. Having said that, these still are our kids and we have to keep on try putting some sense in their heads with whatever opportunity we get as a father, teacher, uncle etc. We have to keep on trying to actually make it a QUAID-E-AZAM KA PAKISTAN. His vision of Pakistan that he depicted in his speech was the real Pakistan and every passing year is proving that his vision was spot on and it is still the torch bearer for today’s generations.
