I have never been good at saying no. And even when I know I have to, the word leaves my lips carrying a weight I can’t seem to put down. I feel guilty knowing that my refusal might hurt someone, as if I am responsible for every emotion my words create.
But sometimes, life leaves you with no gentle way out. You have to say no, not because you don’t care, but because you have to choose yourself, your boundaries, or simply what is right for you.
And perhaps that is the hardest part: saying no with a heavy heart, walking away knowing someone may be hurt, and still having to remind yourself that not every “no” is an act of cruelty. Sometimes, it is an act of honesty.
You can carry compassion for someone’s hurt without carrying the guilt of having caused it. After all, you cannot keep saying yes just to keep everyone else from feeling disappointed, while quietly abandoning yourself in the process.
