A Whole U.S. Town Disappeared… Here’s Why
This American town once had families, homes, schools, and a future — until a U.S. government decision erased it from the map.
St. Thomas, Nevada was founded in 1865 and disappeared after the construction of the Hoover Dam caused Lake Mead to flood the entire area.
Most residents left by 1938, but one man stayed until 1965.
When Lake Mead’s water levels drop today, the ruins of the town reappear — reminding us how progress can erase entire communities, but history never truly disappears.
