Cricket at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics – Qualification Made Simple
The ICC and IOC have officially confirmed how teams will qualify for cricket at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The new system is much different from what was expected. It is simpler in some ways, but there are still a few unusual rules.
How qualification works
- There will be no normal qualifying tournament.
- Teams will qualify based on the ICC T20I rankings on 31 December 2026.
- Six teams will play in both the men's and women's tournaments.
Five regional places
One team will qualify from each Olympic region:
- 🌎 Americas
- 🌍 Europe
- 🌍 Africa
- 🌏 Asia
- 🌏 Oceania
The highest-ranked team from each region earns the Olympic spot.
Special rule for the USA
Because the Olympics are being held in the United States, the USA will automatically receive the Americas place only if they are ranked inside the world's Top 15 by 31 December 2026.
If the USA finish outside the Top 15, they lose that automatic place.
What happens if the USA miss the Top 15?
Instead of giving the Americas place automatically, the final Olympic spot will be decided through a Global Qualifier featuring the eight highest-ranked teams that have not already qualified.
Special situations
Great Britain
England cannot compete in the Olympics by itself. If England qualify, the Olympic team will compete as Great Britain, with Scotland expected to be included. Ireland has not yet decided whether it will join Team GB.
West Indies
The West Indies also cannot compete as one Olympic nation. If they qualify, Cricket West Indies must choose one country from the Caribbean to represent them, likely through a separate qualifying tournament.

Teams likely to play in the Global Qualifier
Women's
- New Zealand
- Sri Lanka
- Pakistan
- Ireland
- Bangladesh
- Scotland
- Thailand
- Papua New Guinea
If Ireland or Scotland become part of Great Britain, their places would likely pass to the Netherlands and the UAE.
Men's
- New Zealand
- Pakistan
- West Indies
- Bangladesh
- Sri Lanka
- Afghanistan
- Ireland
- Zimbabwe
If Ireland joins Great Britain, the Netherlands would most likely replace them.
Things that could still change
- Rankings will continue changing until 31 December 2026.
- New Zealand could overtake Australia in the men's rankings and claim Oceania's Olympic place.
- Ireland has not yet decided whether to compete independently or as part of Great Britain.
- The USA's Olympic place depends entirely on remaining inside the Top 15.
- The ICC has not confirmed whether the USA would also be allowed to play in the Global Qualifier if they lose their automatic place.
Final thoughts
This qualification system is fairer because every region is guaranteed representation. However, several special rules—such as those involving the USA, Great Britain, West Indies, and Ireland—make it more confusing than a traditional qualification tournament. With rankings still changing, the final Olympic lineup remains far from decided.
