Qatar PM urges world to ‘stop using double standards’ and punish Israel.

Israeli airstrikes widely condemned across Arab, Islamic world as violation of Qatar’s sovereignty

Prince Faisal bin Farhan heads Kingdom’s delegation at emergency summit in Doha

RIYADH: Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani urged the international community on Sunday to “stop using double standards” and punish Israel for what he described as its “crimes.”

He was speaking at a preparatory meeting on the eve of an emergency summit of Arab and Islamic leaders organized by Qatar after Israel carried out an unprecedented air strike on Hamas leaders in Doha.

“The time has come for the international community to stop using double standards and to punish Israel for all the crimes it has committed, and Israel needs to know that the ongoing war of extermination that our brotherly Palestinian people is being subjected to, and whose aim is to expel them from their land, will not work,” the prime minister said.

Sheikh Mohammed said Doha remained committed to working with Egypt and the United States to reach a ceasefire in the war that has devastated the Gaza Strip. However, he said that the Israeli strike that killed six people — five members of Hamas and a local Qatari security force member — represented “an attack on the principle of mediation itself.”

“This attack can only be described as state terrorism, an approach pursued by the current extremist Israeli government, which flouts international law,” the minister said. “The reckless and treacherous Israeli aggression was committed while the state of Qatar was hosting official and public negotiations, with the knowledge of the Israeli side itself, and with the aim of achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.”

The preparatory meeting of foreign ministers for the emergency joint Arab-Islamic summit commenced on Sunday in Doha under Sheikh Mohammed’s leadership

The summit is to discuss a draft statement regarding the Israeli attack on Qatar on Sept. 9, which targeted the residences of several Hamas officials in Doha, according to the Qatar News Agency.

The airstrikes were widely condemned across the Arab and Islamic world as a violation of Qatar’s sovereignty and international law.

Foreign ministers of the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member states are attending the summit on Sunday, including Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denounced the Israeli attack as an “aggressive act” and reiterated the Kingdom’s solidarity with Doha, stressing the need for the international community to hold Israel accountable for its actions, the Saudi Press Agency reported

‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ Huge With $70M Opening: A Record For Anime & Crunchyroll; 6th Best For September, Sony’s Biggest YTD

SUNDAY AM: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle had quite the robust Saturday yesterday north of $21M+ which will get the Crunchyroll movie to a massive $70M opening. That’s the sixth biggest opening of September, in addition to the best ever for an anime movie, best ever for Crunchyroll, and best for Sony over the last two years.

EntTelligence says that 4.5 million people went to see Infinity Castle, shelling out an average ticket price of $14.56 for general and $17.91 for PLF.

While some sources were calling Infinity Castle at these high echelon numbers, the ongoing concern was that the anime-narrow audience would reach its limit in attendance this weekend. Read, per Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak, there was very little walk-up business at 33% with 67% of the audience buying tickets in advance (within the last week or more) as of EOD Friday. Sources tell me that the audience did expand beyond the core yesterday, evident in great word of mouth and a 98% audience score. Not to mention, the movie didn’t just play in NYC and LA core B.O. epicenters but the outlier markets as well. Regal Irvine in the OC still the top grossing venue in the country with $167K.

Get this: 55% of the audience per EntTelligence went to see a subtitled version of Infinity Castle, while 33% bought tickets to dubbed showtimes. Lots of evening playtime for this per EntTelligence with 53% of Saturday’s moviegoers watching the Crunchyroll title after 5PM.

All of this bodes well for moviegoing — yes, it does, cynics. No one was expecting September to overperform the way it is now with record openings for a Conjuring movie last weekend with Last Rites ($84M) and now the crazy start to Infinity Castle. All good vibes for Paul Thomas Anderson’s most commercial movie (at $130M), One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which is already getting great word of mouth ahead of its Sept. 26 opening, some saying it’s so well-paced, it’s like Keanu Reeves’ Speed.

The P&A on these anime movies are quite low, this one I hear around $10M-$12M, and no linear or sports spend. Sony captured the lion’s share of the audience on the Crunchyroll streaming service in trailers and ads, that OTT reaching 17M. Some of the shout-outs in the marketing campaign include the first ever Demon Slayer watch party with the entire series airing across Crunchyroll YouTube channels worldwide over a 24-hour period. In addition to collectibles and popcorn buckets available at theaters for the movie, paid campaigns included YouTube, Meta, TikTok, X;

This is the fourth Demon Slayer movie to be released in U.S. theaters, the last one in 2021 before Sony Pictures acquired Crunchyroll. Hence, it’s the first Demon Slayer released under the Sony label. Even though this is a Crunchyroll title, and Sony owns Crunchyroll, I understand the Culver City lot gets a 20% distribution fee.

Top six openings for September:

It (2017, NL) $123.4M
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (WB) $111M
It Chapter 2 (2019, NL) $91M
Conjuring Last Rites (2025, NL) $84M
Shang-Chi (2021 Dis/Marvel) $75.3M
Demon Slayer…Infinity Castle (2025, Sony) $60M

Trump ‘ready’ to impose sanctions on Russia if Nato nations stop buying its oil

In Truth Social post, US president also suggests members consider imposing tariffs of 50% to 100% on China

Donald Trump has said he is ready to impose sanctions on Moscow, but on the condition that all Nato allies agree to completely halt purchases of Russian oil and implement their own sanctions.

He also suggested members of the transatlantic alliance consider imposing tariffs of 50% to 100% on China for its purchases of Russian petroleum as a way to help end the war.

In a post on his Truth Social site on Saturday, the US president wrote: “I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA.”

Trump also said the alliance’s commitment to winning the war “has been far less than 100%” and branded the purchase of Russian oil by some Nato members as “shocking”.

“If NATO does as I say, the war will end quickly, and all of those lives will be saved! If not, you are just wasting my time, and the time, energy, and money of the United States,” he continued.

Turkey, a Nato member, is the third largest buyer of Russia’s oil products, after China and India, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air. Other Nato members who purchase Russian oil include Hungary and Slovakia.

Trump has repeatedly threatened Russia with additional sanctions, but so far he has failed to follow through.

Trump also presented the prospect of Nato imposing tariffs on China, which has deepened ties with Moscow, following a high-profile summit between Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin recently in Beijing.

“I believe that [NATO sanctions on Russia], plus NATO, as a group, placing 50% to 100% tariffs on China, to be fully withdrawn after the war with Russia and Ukraine is ended, will also be of great help in ending this deadly, but ridiculous war,” Trump said.

The US president has already placed a 25% import tax on goods from India for its buying of Russian energy products, but has not yet placed additional tariffs on China for doing the same.

Trump’s post came as tensions mounted after multiple Russian drones flew into Poland on Wednesday, entering Nato airspace and marking a potential escalation of the war, prompting the alliance to announce a new mission to bolster its eastern flank.

Apple iPhone 17 vs. Samsung Galaxy S25: Two Flagship Lines, One Tough Choice

Both Samsung and Apple are making strong plays for your pocket. We pit the new iPhone 17 against the tested Galaxy S25 to see which one comes out on top.

Our team tests, rates, and reviews more than 1,500 products each year to help you make better buying decisions and get more from technology.

Eight phones are available between the Apple iPhone 17 and Samsung Galaxy S25 lineups, with the iPhone ranging from $799 to $1,999 and the Galaxy S25 line from $799.99 to $1,659.99 for the top S25 Ultra.

Here are the starting prices for this octet:

Apple iPhone 17, $799; iPhone Air, $999; iPhone 17 Pro, $1,099; iPhone 17 Pro Max, $1,199

Samsung Galaxy S25, $799.99; S25+, $999.99; S25 Edge, $1,099.99; Galaxy S25 Ultra, $1,299.99

Adding storage increases the price of each phone. The two lineups are priced similarly at most tiers, but the Apple iPhone Pro Max with 2TB of storage is the most expensive model at nearly $2,000. Also, the base iPhone 17 ships with 256GB of storage, whereas the base S25 has half of that.

If dollars and cents are the only important things to you, the Apple iPhone 17 is the lowest-cost phone (even if only by 99 cents). But it's potentially a better value than the Galaxy S25 because it has twice the storage.

Winner: iPhone 17

Design: Styles and Colors Galore
Generally, smartphone design has settled on the rounded rectangle with a screen dominating the front and a front-facing camera interrupting it. A power button, volume rocker, USB-C port, and a camera bump are also typical. All of this is true of every iPhone 17 and Galaxy S25.The iPhone 17 relies on the Dynamic Island to contain its selfie camera and Face ID for biometrics. The Galaxy S25 phones have a punch hole front-facing camera and use an under-display fingerprint sensor for security, positioned near the bottom of the screen.
The rear panels stand out the most. The iPhone 17 looks like a modern iPhone with two rear cameras, while the Air features a Google Pixel-like horizontal bar with just one camera. The iPhone 17 Pro has a large rectangular plateau to contain its three main cameras.
Meanwhile, the Samsung S25, S25+, and Ultra feature a flat back with circular camera rings lined up vertically in the top left corner. The S25 Edge's two rear cameras are stacked atop a vertical pill-shaped island.
The Galaxy S25 is the smallest and lightest phone of the group at 5.78 by 2.78 by 0.28 inches (HWD) and 5.71 ounces. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the heaviest at 8.22 ounces, while the Air is the thinnest at 0.22 inches thick, just beating the 0.23-inch thickness of the S25 Edge.
All iPhone 17s and Galaxy S25s have an IP68 rating to protect them from dust and water. Apple uses aluminum for the iPhone 17's frame and the 17 Pro's unibody chassis, and titanium for the Air. The iPhones' screens are all protected by Apple's anti-reflective Ceramic Shield 2, which the company says is three times more scratch-resistant than the previous version. Every phone's back, except the iPhone 17, is protected with the first-generation Ceramic Shield.
Samsung builds the S25 and S25+ with aluminum frames and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 glass on the front and back. The S25 Ultra has a titanium frame, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back, and the anti-reflective Corning Gorilla Armor 2 on the front. Colors? Too many to list.
With so many sizes, shapes, materials, and colors, surely one will speak to you. Design is subjective, so it's your call.

US joins UN Security Council condemnation of Israeli strikes on Qatar

The United Nations Security Council has condemned Israel's strikes on a residential compound in the Qatari capital Doha, which targeted senior members of Hamas.

The statement - which did not directly name Israel - was backed by all 15 Security Council members, including the US, which traditionally blocks actions against its close ally.

"Council members underscored the importance of de-escalation and expressed their solidarity with Qatar," read the statement, drafted by the UK and France. Israel defended its decision to mount the attack.

Qatar has played a key role in brokering diplomatic efforts to end the Israel-Gaza war, serving as a mediator of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel.

It has hosted the Hamas political bureau since 2012 and is a close US ally, hosting a large American airbase in the desert south-west of Doha.

The emergency meeting was requested by Qatar, Algeria, Pakistan and Somalia. Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani travelled to New York to attend.

"This attack puts the international community before a test," al-Thani told the council.

"Israel, led by blusterous extremists, has gone beyond any borders, any limitations when it comes to behaviour. We are unable to predict what Israel will do. How can we host Israeli representatives when they have committed this attack?"

Pakistan's ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said: "It is evident that Israel, the occupying power, is bent on doing everything to undermine and blow up every possibility of peace".

Meanwhile, Algeria's ambassador Amar Bendjama said the Security Council remained "constrained" as it was "unable even to name the aggressor, to qualify aggression as a violation of international law".

Israel's representative, Danny Danon, defended the attack, telling the meeting: "This strike sends a message that should echo across this chamber. There is no sanctuary for terrorists, not in Gaza, not in Tehran, not in Doha."

For a Security Council statement to be issued, all 15 members must sign off on the text. The US has long-blocked statements critical of Israel - making its backing of this one, though Israel is not named, notable.

US President Donald Trump earlier criticised Israel's strikes, writing that unilaterally striking inside Qatar "does not advance Israel or America's goals".

However, he added that "this unfortunate incident could serve as an opportunity for PEACE", and that the elimination of Hamas was a "worthy goal".

The strikes on Doha shocked many in the region, who had long assumed that close relations with the US would offer security.

In May, Trump announced a "historic" economic agreement signed between Qatar and the US that he said was valued at least $1.2 trillion (£890bn).

Qatar also recently gifted Trump a plane - valued at $400m - as an "unconditional gift" to be used as the new Air Force One, the official aircraft of the US president.

On Friday, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) summoned the deputy Israeli ambassador over the Israeli strike on Doha as well as what it described as "hostile and unacceptable" remarks by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The UAE normalised diplomatic ties with Israel under the 2020 Abraham Accords, a US-brokered agreement which led to co-operation across a range of issues, from security to the economy.

The accords, which were also signed by Morocco, Bahrain and Sudan, are widely seen as one of Donald Trump's major foreign policy achievements from his first term in office.

Hamas said that its negotiating team survived Israel's strikes on Doha on Tuesday, but that five of its members were killed, including the son of the group's chief negotiator Khalil al-Hayya. A Qatari security officer was also killed.

Zeekr 001 shocks Audi: China's EV tech forces globals to license for speed.

The global auto design scene is being reshaped by Chinese EV tech

When Audi executives first encountered the Zeekr 001 in 2021—a long-range electric vehicle with European styling—it served as a stark wake-up call for the premium German automaker. Chinese technology was needed to compete with Chinese rivals.

"The Zeekr 001 back then shocked quite everyone," said Stefan Poetzl, president of SAIC Audi Sales and Marketing. "We needed to do something about it."

Audi developed the AUDI E5 Sportback in only 18 months to strengthen its EV offerings for Chinese buyers, leveraging technology from its Chinese partner SAIC, including batteries, electric powertrains, infotainment software, and advanced driver-assistance systems.

Audi plans to begin delivering the $33,000 EV to customers in China this month, and its global competitors are now turning to Chinese intellectual property to accelerate new model launches. For China-specific models, Toyota and Volkswagen have joint development initiatives, drawing on technology from Chinese partners GAC and Xpeng, respectively.

Renault and Ford aim to take it further by creating global models based on Chinese EV platforms, sources said. Renault did not respond to a request for comment. Ford declined to comment.

These licensing agreements represent an expanding yet modest revenue source for Chinese EV manufacturers and provide a fresh quid pro quo.

Global automakers rely on Chinese technology to overcome development challenges and introduce new EVs swiftly. At the same time, Chinese firms urgently require extra income amid a fierce domestic price war and escalating trade tensions overseas.

"It's a very clever, win-win arrangement," said Will Wang, general manager of Shanghai-based consulting firm Autodatas, which produces teardown analyses of top-selling EV models.

'CHINA INSIDE'

This emerging approach echoes the "Intel Inside" campaign of the 1990s, in which U.S. chip giant Intel leveraged cutting-edge components to elevate computers into premium devices.

Here, Chinese automakers offer EV technology as a complete package: the foundational elements for turnkey, white-label battery-electric vehicles, ideal even for low-volume producers with limited budgets.

Leapmotor (9863.HK) has teamed up with Stellantis (STLAM.MI) to market its EVs beyond China and is in discussions with other brands to license its technology, CEO Zhu Jiangming told Reuters.

Adopting a pre-engineered Chinese EV chassis and software could save billions in dollars and years of development time, helping legacy automakers close the gap with Chinese competitors, according to industry experts.

Renault (RENA.PA) was an early pioneer, producing the affordable Dacia Spring EV on a platform from China's Dongfeng for European sales beginning in 2021.

Renault has advanced further with the upcoming electric Twingo, being developed at its Shanghai research center, where Chinese EV engineering firm Launch Design is supplying technical expertise for the platform, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Launch did not respond to requests for comment.

Additional "China Inside" vehicles may arrive soon. Two people with knowledge of the situation said Ford is pursuing a Chinese collaborator to supply EV platform technologies. CEO Jim Farley has often tested Chinese EVs and recently commended Xiaomi's SU7 electric sedan.

Volkswagen has broadened its efforts to create China-tailored models across all powertrains, based on platforms jointly developed with Xpeng, incorporating the latter's designs for electronics and software.

Analysts note that established automakers often falter in crafting nimble EV architectures that support frequent updates, owing to their complex organizational setups.

That's why Volkswagen is exploring whether Xpeng's EV technologies can supplement or supplant its own, said Yale Zhang, managing director at Shanghai-based consultancy AutoForesight. If successful in China, Volkswagen might extend the approach worldwide, Zhang added.

A Volkswagen China spokesperson told Reuters that its partnership with Xpeng remains China-focused for now.

Xpeng's He Xiaopeng has indicated that the two companies aim to extend their collaboration beyond China. This would enhance Xpeng's revenue without the need for overseas factories, said Autodatas' Wang.

Oliver Wyman analyst Marco Santino noted that traditional automakers could harness the "firepower" of intense Chinese EV rivalry to surge ahead in development.

"You get a much more quality-proof product in the market in a shorter timeframe," Santino said.
