Tuscaloosa Police Chase Ends in Tragedy: 20-Year-Old Elyis Taylor Dies After High-Speed Pursuit Across Two Alabama Counties

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A late-night police pursuit spanning two counties ended in tragedy after a 20-year-old Tuscaloosa man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.

Officials with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit identified the man as Elyis Kani Taylor, a resident of Tuscaloosa. The incident remains under active investigation as authorities work to piece together the sequence of events.

According to Capt. Jack Kennedy, the situation began at approximately 11:40 p.m. Monday, when Tuscaloosa police officers initiated a traffic stop for a violation. During the interaction, officers reported detecting the odor of suspected illegal drugs and instructed Taylor to exit the vehicle.

The pursuit came to an end when Taylor crashed his vehicle. Responding officers discovered him with critical injuries, including what investigators determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators revealed that Taylor was in contact with a family member during the chase. According to authorities, he told the relative he was fleeing from police, had recently been released from jail, and did not want to return to custody.

During the call, the family member reportedly heard what was believed to be a gunshot, moments before the crash occurred.
