Everyone's optimizing for Google rankings.
Almost nobody's optimizing for AI citations.
That's a problem — because the numbers are already brutal.
Organic click-through has dropped 61% on Google searches where an AI Overview shows up. AI Overviews now appear on roughly a quarter to over half of all searches, depending on who's measuring.
Meanwhile, traffic from AI platforms converts at rates traditional SEO can't touch: ChatGPT visitors convert at up to 15.9%, Claude up to 16.8%, Perplexity around 10.5% — versus 1.76% for standard organic search.
So here's the uncomfortable part.
The peer-reviewed research behind this (Princeton, Georgia Tech, IIT Delhi — KDD 2024) found that the things SEO trained us to do barely move the needle in AI search. Keyword stuffing? Performs worse than doing nothing.
What actually gets you cited:
→ Concrete statistics, not vague claims
→ Direct quotations and verifiable sources
→ A clear, direct answer in the first 60 words of a section
→ Structured data (Article, FAQPage, Author schema)
→ Entity consistency across your whole site
And it's platform-specific. ChatGPT pulls from Bing's index. Perplexity uses its own vector search. Google AI Overviews draws from Google's index — and the overlap between what ranks #1-10 organically and what actually gets cited by AI has collapsed from ~75% a year ago to as low as 17% today.
Ranking well on Google no longer means showing up in the answer.
Two completely different games now. Most brands are still only playing one of them.
Is your content built to be cited — or just to rank?
