The Thirteen Colonies began as small English settlements along North America’s Atlantic coast between 1607 and 1733. Virginia became the first successful colony, followed by New England communities shaped by religious settlers. Over time, three distinct regions emerged. New England built its identity on shipbuilding, small farms, and tight communities. The Middle Colonies thrived on trade, fertile land, and cultural diversity. The Southern Colonies developed plantation economies dependent on enslaved labor, exporting to***co, rice, and indigo.
Though united under the British crown, the colonies differed sharply in religion, politics, and daily life. They grew economically strong and increasingly independent-minded. By the mid-1700s, British taxes and restrictions clashed with colonial ideas of self-rule, fueling protests and revolutionary thought. In 1776, the colonies joined together to declare independence, transforming a patchwork of settlements into the foundation of the United States.
