Travelling Curmudgeon Travel isn't always as magical as the internet makes it seem, but sometimes it is... Currently in Kathmandu, Nepal 🇳🇵🇳🇵

Travelling Curmudgeon exists, because travel isn't always as magical as crappy travel blogs, 'influencers', vloggers, good travel blogs, social media and mainstream media would have you believe. But sometimes it is.....

Much like Antifa, Travelling Curmudgeon is more of an idea than a physical organisation. It's more of a vague philosophy than a coherent editorial policy. More of a way of li

fe than an actual group of natural persons or legal entities who might be liable for copyright infringement, libel, death threats, deportation or other such nasty business.

When you're a lonely little tree, so you decide to start growing around a brick wall in order to be guaranteed some company, but the brick wall has other ideas and just up and vanishes on you overnight.

Just another minor tragedy on the streets of Patan. Don't feel too bad for the tree though, because it's entirely plausible that it deserved the abandonment.

From what I've seen around here the brick walls are quite stoic, so it probably wouldn't have run off without good reason....

In a lot of ways - both good and less good - Nepal feels like it's a few decades (at least) behind the rest of the world.

So in that vein, having a company with the slogan 'Experience the magic of the internet with us!' makes perfect sense, and really exudes some quaint, wholesome late-1990s AOL, bleep bloop dial-up over the phone line to connect with the world at the end of history vibes.

Ah, the good old days. Or at least we thought so....

Nepalis are so genuinely welcoming and friendly and unimposing (and modestly sized) that it's easy to forget they had a fairly recent, fairly bloody civil war, so also a bit surprising when you come across vehicular artwork like this....

NB: I have the urge to go on a long rant here about the war (since I just read a book about it), but the gist is that the country was basically still in the feudal ages until a few decades ago, so the Maoists started an insurgency against the unimaginably corrupt, Western-backed ruling class with some pretty reasonable demands, which of course the Americans and British paid to have the ruthlessly crushed, because serfs shouldn't be getting any ideas about actual freedom, but in the end the Maoists still won, only to become almost as corrupt as (and arguably more incompetent than) their predecessors, and the country is more or less just as much of a dysfunctional mess now as it was 30 years ago, only as of a few months ago it's once again run by puppets of American and Indian intelligence (allegedly). Oops, sorry, that did turn into a decent length rant. Feel free to do your own research for more info.

This one is special - the seamless blending of nature with urban development. From now on whenever you hear terms like 'green space' or 'sustainable development' or 'smart city' you can close your eyes and picture this little slice of futuristic utopia....

NB: I LOVE sea salt caramel ice cream - or preferably fine Italian gelato, even though I still don't understand what the difference is - and after seeing ads for this particular variety all over Kathmandu, one hot sunny afternoon I finally decided to try it. And it was fine. But I tasted neither salt nor caramel, at all, which was rather disappointing given the name.

Just your typical Patan alleyway. The physical damage Nepal does to your head with its absurdly low doorways (and in this case an entire alleyway) it makes up for by allowing you to feel like a giant even if you're only 177cm tall....

I was aware of steamed momo, fried momo, jhol (ie soup) momo and C-momo (ie chilli), but I only learned* what kothey momo were a couple weeks ago - they're steamed and then half-fried and became my go-to option.

These ones are chicken and the place is the type where you share tables and it's also super popular with students, so eating there will inevitably make you feel old if you're not under 25, and sadly I'm no longer under 25.

But I still ate here all the time, which tells you how good their momo are....

*There's a very good chance that I learned what they were three years ago and forgot. But that's one of the benefits of no longer being under 25 - you can forgot lots of things, and then get the joy of learning them again for the first time 🥰🥰
