During my recent interaction with css and pcs aspirants from Balochistan, especially those aspiring for one paper test held regularly by the bpsc, I learnt why significant majority among them fail to perform well in the English Essay part. Here I put my analysis of the English Essay portion from a professional point of view.
1. Unlike the FPSC which is professionally well equipped, technologically modernised, and technically reliable, the BPSC is missing out on the technological front. It does not have any proper system for evaluating psychological assessment test of the aspirants; therefore, the esteemed examiners now are bent to evaluate psychological fitness of the aspirants through statement based Essay titles.
2. For evaluating suitability of the aspirants for any given responsibility through BPSC for the government of Balochistan, the candidates are required to meet up the demands ( accuracy, principles of discourse, relevancy, organisation and English Proficiency) the examiner in the title. Failing to meet this requirements can downscale an aspirant's overall performance, as the essay examiner has the full right to award even 00 marks to the candidates.
3. The remaining questions of the paper are further marked in light of the average marks awarded by the essay examiner. However, if essay is given passing score (7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or maximum 15 out of total 20) all the questuons of the paper are given score that an aspirant genuinely deserves.
4. An extreme violation of the paragraph rules also beset majority with failure. Instead of discussing single particular idea in a paragraph, majority tries to fill in the paragraph with a number of irrelevant, incoherent and loosely related ideas. This creates a very negative impression on the mind of the essay examiner about the aspirants competing for prestigious provincial services.
5. Majority of the aspirants again have a stronger tendency towards factualising (cause, effect, solution) the essay topic. Now, the BPSC has changed its mind from evaluating knowledge base economy of the aspirants in the essay to examining critical thinking patterns. Those with even limited knowledge base but effective and convincing patterns of critical thinking skills can perform better than those who have good knowledge base.
Remember! Bpsc essay ( short essay) is never for evaluating aspirants' knowledge base; instead, it is for aspirants' psychological assessment, examining their critical thinking and critical knowledge base, and evaluating their suitability ( fitness) for given job.
