A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco Friday night, killing nearly 300 people and damaging buildings in the historic city of Marrakech in what the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said was the strongest tremor to hit that part of the North African nation in more than a century.

The quake struck in Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range shortly after 11 p.m. local time at the relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.4 miles), USGS said, with the epicenter located about 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of Marrakech, a city of some 840,000 people and a popular tourist destination.

At least 296 people were killed, and 153 others were wounded, Morocco’s Interior Ministry said Saturday.

Many spent the night on the streets in multiple cities fearful of aftershocks as a desperate mission to locate those trapped in the rubble got underway. Health authorities also called on people to donate blood to help victims.

Most deaths occurred in mountain areas close to the epicenter that were hard to reach, authorities said, and rescue teams were having difficulty reaching the worst affected areas after roads were damaged, state-run TV Al Aoula reported.

The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces warned that residents to pay close attention to follow up tremors.

“We remind you of the need to exercise caution and take safety measures due to the risk of aftershocks,” the military wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The USGS said Friday night’s quake was unusually strong for that part of Morocco.

“Earthquakes of this size in the region are uncommon, but not unexpected. Since 1900, there have been no earthquakes M6 (magnitude 6) and larger within 500 km of this earthquake, and only 9 M5 (magnitude 5) and larger earthquakes,” USGS said.

The US body predicted that “significant damage is likely and the disaster is potentially widespread”, noting that many people in the area reside in structures that are “highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking”

A reserve day has been incorporated for the Asia Cup 2023 Super Fours match between India and Pakistan, scheduled to take place on September 10th (Sunday) at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.

According to a release by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), if adverse weather suspends play during the India vs. Pakistan game, the match will continue on September 11th (Monday) from the point it was suspended.

The wedding ceremony of Pakistan's top fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shahid Afridi's daughter Ansha, is expected to take place soon after the culmination of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 later this month.

Sources say that the wedding and valima ceremonies are scheduled for September 19 and September 21 respectively.

The events will take place in Islamabad, the sources added.

The two families — however — have not yet confirmed the date for the couple's wedding.

Prior to this, Ansha's father and Pakistan's former all-rounder Shahid Afridi in April had said that Shaheen's wedding festivities would begin in September this year.

The former cricketer revealed the news while speaking to a private news channel.

It is to be noted that Shaheen is currently representing Pakistan's national side in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 which is set to culminate on September 17 this month.

Shaheen and Ansha tied the knot earlier this year in Karachi. Soon after the Nikah, a reception was also held where cricketers Babar Azam, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Naseem Shah and Shadab Khan, as well as squash legend Jahangir Khan, were among the attendees.

The couple’s Mehndi function was also held a day before the Nikah ceremony. They got engaged two years ago.

The 23-year-old pacer had revealed that it was he who thought about marrying Ansha first.

“It was my marriage so obviously, it was me who thought about marrying her. Lala and my brother have been friends for a very long time, and our elders know each other too. So, my mother went ahead with the rishta (proposal) and the families agreed,” he said shyly while speaking during an interview.

Upon where the couple first met, Shaheen could not think of a particular moment since they’d known each other for a while.

“There wasn’t a proper first meet-up as such. We used to go to each other’s houses. Whenever they’d come to our house I’d see her around and then we met at our Nikah,” he said.

“They say that you should always have a life partner that appreciates you and thank God I have that. She doesn’t get involved much but has always supported me,” he exclaimed.
