📌 India Hate Lab (IHL) Report 2026: State-Backed Minority Persecution in India
The Washington DC–based India Hate Lab, an initiative of the Center for the Study of Organized Hate (CSOH), has released its most alarming report yet.
“Hate Speech Events in India: Report 2025” documents 1,318 verified hate-speech incidents across 21 states, IIOJK, and Delhi — averaging four incidents every day.
🔴 Key Findings • Hate speech rose 13% from 2024 and 97% since 2023
• Muslims targeted in 98% of incidents; Christians saw a 41% rise
• 308 cases classified as dangerous speech, openly calling for violence
• Dehumanizing language and conspiracy theories (“love jihad”, “land jihad”, “infiltrators”) dominate public discourse
📍 Political & Geographic Pattern • 88% of incidents occurred in BJP-governed states
• Hate spikes aligned with election cycles and religious processions
• Over 160 RSS-BJP-aligned groups involved, including VHP & Bajrang Dal
⚠️ Real-World Impact Hate speech directly preceded lynchings, forced evictions, mosque demolitions, church attacks, and mass expulsions, reinforcing what experts call stochastic terrorism.
🌍 International Warnings (Jan 2026) • US Holocaust Memorial Museum ranks India 4th globally for risk of mass killing
• Genocide Watch places India at Stage 8: Persecution
• IAMC & South Asia Justice Campaign document systematic violence and extrajudicial killings
📢 Bottom Line The IHL report exposes how hate has become a political instrument in India, normalized, amplified on social media, and protected by institutional silence. With elections ahead, the warning is clear: without accountability, violence will escalate and minorities will pay the price.
