Acidosis in cows, also known as rumen acidosis or grain overload, is a metabolic disease where the rumen pH drops below the normal range (below 5.5) due to an excess of readily fermentable carbohydrates in the diet.
Symptoms:
Early signs: Reduced feed intake, lethargy, and mild diarrhea.
More severe signs: Depression, dehydration, ruminal atony (cessation of rumen contractions), and potentially laminitis (inflammation of the hooves).
In severe cases: Recumbency (inability to stand), coma, and death.
Treatment and Prevention:
Treatment:
For acute cases, treatment may involve oral fluids, antacids, antibiotics, and potentially intravenous fluids.
Prevention:
Gradual introduction of high-grain diets, ensuring adequate fiber intake, and avoiding sudden changes in feeding practices are crucial for prevention.
Dietary adjustments:
Including buffers like sodium bicarbonate in the diet can help neutralize rumen acidity.
