Severe monsoon rains have triggered devastating floods across Pakistan, affecting Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir. Despite contributing only 0.9% to global carbon emissions, Pakistan is the 5th most climate-vulnerable country, highlighting a clear case of climate injustice.

Since June 26, over 200 people have died and many more injured, including children, due to rain-related incidents. In Gilgit-Baltistan, a record-breaking 48°C heatwave accelerated glacier melt, leading to Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, and landslides. Roads, including sections of the Karakoram Highway, are blocked, leaving many stranded. Authorities have declared emergencies in affected areas.

This is not just a natural disaster—it is a harsh reality of climate change, where Pakistan bears the brunt despite minimal responsibility.

Gilgit-Baltistan is witnessing a construction boom, with the number of hotels increasing rapidly each year. While tourism continues to rise, locals and tourism experts warn that this growth is coming at the expense of the region’s fragile ecosystems. According to them, rapid and unregulated development is transforming lush valleys into concrete zones, accelerating the climate crisis in one of Pakistan’s most vulnerable regions.

Earlier, the Gilgit-Baltistan government imposed a five-year ban on new hotel construction and expansion in ecologically sensitive areas, including the Hunza and Baltistan regions, as a result of environmental degradation caused by unchecked tourism infrastructure.

Flash floods triggered by monsoon rains have hit across Gilgit-Baltistan, with 49 homes destroyed in Chogogrong village, Ghanche alone. Several fertile lands, livestock, and public properties were also lost. The situation has intensified in Skardu, Ghanche, Kharmang, Shigar, and Deosai, where rising waters and landslides have disrupted connectivity. Dozens of tourists stranded in Deosai, Burge Nala, and Sadpara were airlifted to safety by the Pakistan Army and rescue teams, as emergency efforts continue across the region.

Floods are striking Gilgit-Baltistan with increasing frequency and severity. Floods in the region have surged by 33% over the past five years, turning once-rare events into seasonal threats. The destruction is staggering every year, homes are wiped out, farmlands vanish, and families are displaced, undermining food security and livelihoods in rural areas.

Environmental experts attribute this worsening trend to deforestation, glacier retreat, and rising global temperatures. This crisis highlights the urgent need for climate-resilient infrastructure, forest conservation, and early warning systems to protect both people and the environment in Gilgit-Baltistan.

What was once seen as isolated incidents is now a pattern of climate breakdown.

You’ve heard the terms cloudburst and flash floods often, but do you really know what they mean and how they’re different?

This video explains how cloudbursts occur due to intense, short bursts of rain caused by rising temperatures and excess moisture in the air. It also explores how cloudbursts and other factors like glacier melt, unplanned construction, and heavy rainfall contribute to the rise of flash floods in vulnerable regions like Gilgit-Baltistan. Understanding the science behind these events is key to building awareness and preparing for climate-driven disasters.

In Gilgit City, even light to moderate rain is enough to paralyze daily life. Streets quickly resemble ponds, not due to floods, but because of the city’s non-existent drainage and sewage systems. Locals stated during media talks, “This isn’t a one-off issue; it’s the result of decades of negligence, poor urban planning, and a complete lack of investment in basic infrastructure.”

Urban experts warn that without immediate interventions—such as proper drainage systems, water channeling, and climate-resilient infrastructure—Gilgit will face worsening urban floods. Furthermore, this is not just poor planning—it’s a warning sign. As climate change increases rainfall unpredictability, cities like Gilgit urgently need sustainable solutions before temporary puddles turn into permanent disasters.

If 100 mm of rain can shut the city down, what happens when real floods arrive?

The Karakoram Highway (Sharah-e-Karakoram) and Babusar Road were blocked for three days due to intense seasonal rainfall and flooding. As of July 23, the roads have been partially reopened to light traffic, but travelers are strongly urged to avoid all non-essential trips until full inspections and repairs are completed.

Drivers are advised to check local weather forecasts and road-condition updates before travelling and to contact relevant authorities or hotlines for current information. The key message emphasizes that safety comes first; travel only when conditions are confirmed as fully safe.

Heavy rainfall and flash floods have once again disrupted travel along the Karakoram Highway, with key sections affected by landslides and water overflow. In several areas, road access remains blocked, leaving both locals and tourists stranded. While authorities are working to clear debris and restore connectivity, the growing impact of deforestation cannot be ignored. The loss of forest cover has weakened natural barriers, making mountain slopes more vulnerable to erosion and landslides. As climate-related disasters intensify across Gilgit-Baltistan, the consequences of unchecked deforestation are becoming increasingly visible.

Gilgit-Baltistan experienced a complete internet and cellular network outage, leaving residents disconnected for several hours. The disruption, reported across multiple districts, was caused by damage to the region’s fibre optic infrastructure, reportedly due to ongoing flash floods and landslides. With limited service providers operating in the area, the incident once again highlights the region’s fragile digital connectivity and the urgent need for redundant communication systems in climate-vulnerable zones.
