✈️ Bhutan’s Gelephu International Airport – A Visionary Fusion of Tradition and Innovation!
Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the Gelephu International Airport is set to redefine air travel by seamlessly integrating Bhutan’s rich heritage, nature, and cutting-edge architecture. The terminal will be constructed using a modular mass timber structure, inspired by the traditional Bhutanese ‘Kachen’ pillars, renowned for their structural strength and intricate craftsmanship. Every timber element will be adorned with symbolic carvings, representing Bhutan’s past, present, and future.
What sets this airport apart is its harmonious relationship with nature. Lush tropical trees and forest courtyards will weave through the airport, from the arrival plaza to the tarmac, creating a tranquil and mindful travel experience. The design also emphasizes sustainability, using locally sourced glulam timber and eco-conscious materials.
As a key aviation hub for the newly envisioned Gelephu Mindfulness City, the airport will serve 1.3 million passengers by 2040, with capacity increasing to 5.5 million by 2065. More than just an infrastructure project, it represents Bhutan’s forward-thinking vision—blending modern innovation with deep cultural roots.
Expected to open in 2029, the design will be showcased at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, highlighting Bhutan’s commitment to sustainable and mindful urban development.
