Muthusamy turns the tide after Imam-Shan onslaught in Lahore
LAHORE: Just as Pakistan looked poised to dominate Day 1 of the opening Test against South Africa, left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy delivered a decisive double blow to haul his side back into contention by tea on Sunday at the Gaddafi Stadium.
Pakistan ended the second session at 199 for 4 in 57 overs, with hopes of a commanding first-innings total tempered by two quick wickets, those of Imam-ul-Haq, heartbreakingly dismissed for 93, and Saud Shakeel, who fell for a golden duck.
The day had begun with drama right from the start, as Abdullah Shafique was trapped leg-before by a fiery Kagiso Rabada on just the third ball of the innings. The early loss might have unsettled a lesser side, but Pakistan responded with poise, thanks to the experienced shoulders of Shan Masood and the returning Imam-ul-Haq.
The left-handed pair stitched together a 161-run stand for the second wicket, silencing the Proteas attack with a mix of grit, flair, and controlled aggression. Shan, in particular, looked fluent as he raced to his 12th Test half-century, peppering the off-side with trademark drives and wristy flicks. He eventually fell to Prenelan Subrayen for a well-crafted 76 off 147 balls, laced with nine boundaries and a six.
Imam, making a comeback to the Test side after nearly a year, showcased the calm maturity of a seasoned campaigner. Rotating strike smartly and capitalizing on every scoring opportunity, the 28-year-old registered his 10th Test fifty and seemed destined for three figures. But just as he entered the nervous nineties, Muthusamy trapped him lbw for 93, ending what could have been a career-defining innings. The very next ball saw Saud Shakeel fall in identical fashion, giving Muthusamy a chance at a hat-trick and suddenly turning the tide in South Africa’s favor.
Meanwhile, Babar Azam, who walked in after Shan's dismissal, looked sublime as ever. The Pakistan captain struck boundaries with his signature elegance and, in the process, etched his name into the record books by becoming the first Pakistani to cross 3,000 runs in the ICC World Test Championship, joining an elite list of just eight batters worldwide to reach the milestone.
At tea, Babar remained unbeaten and composed, eyeing a big score as Pakistan now look to rebuild and finish Day 1 with a position of strength. With reverse swing likely to play a role and spin already making inroads, the final session could well dictate the course of this Test match.
