Recent results from the NED University aptitude test have laid bare the academic inequalities that exist within Sindh. While Karachi-based students, particularly those from the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi, performed relatively well — with only 23.4% failing — the majority of students from boards outside Karachi struggled to clear the test. The failure rate for these boards exceeded 54%, despite the fact that most candidates were high-achieving A-graders in their intermediate examinations.

Marx famously posited that labour and capital are locked in an antagonist relationship. Although many authoritarian states and populist leaders claim to represent the interests of the working classes, we have not really seen any successful example of a state led by the working classes. This does not, however, mean that there is no way to curb the unfair excesses of capitalism. Some mixed economies have rolled out impressive welfare policies to help secure a decent lifestyle for a majority of their populace. In most other countries, however, the gap between the owners of capital and the labouring masses keeps growing.

Pakistan is experiencing a significant shift in its journalism landscape, particularly concerning climate reporting. It's now rare to find a major media house without at least one dedicated, full-time climate reporter. While these reporters are often junior journalists or less experienced than their senior counterparts, both English and local language media outlets are making this commitment.

In December 2001, the release of Monsoon Wedding brought two enemies and neighbours — India and Pakistan — back into a charmingly ambivalent cultural dialogue. The film, incrusted with varicolored threads, also revivified Farida Khanum's 'Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo' in a tragically comic moment that only our desi urban audiences, caught between modernisation and tradition, can truly appreciate. I was personally enthused by the subtle exposé of the girl child abuse and the perfidy of a so-called father-figure uncle. It was notable that the director was Mira Nair.

Recent discussions at the federal level about reviving the Jirga system in the merged tribal districts are deeply concerning and deserve serious national scrutiny. These proposals, if pursued, will mark a dangerous reversal of one of Pakistan's most significant constitutional reforms — the merger of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa under the 25th Constitutional Amendment carried out in 2018.

China's recent actions on India's northern frontier have gone beyond mere symbolism. From altering maps to weaponising minerals, the intent is clear: to recast geopolitical narratives in Beijing's favour while undermining India's sovereignty. The depiction of Jammu & Kashmir as "Occupied Kashmir" and Arunachal Pradesh as "South Tibet" on official Chinese maps is a strategic move, not a cartographic slip. It is the sign of ever-tougher stance, as geography is turned into the instrument of policy — or, rather, the instrument of influence.

India, apart from its very carefully curated glitzy and 'shining' image, has been quietly sulking at the loss of its status internationally, consequent to its brief but humiliating skirmish with Pakistan recently, and the dawning of Indian reality on a pro-Indian American establishment. The US has undoubtedly helped New Delhi in its great power aspirations, ostensibly as a bulwark against a rising China. Whether India ever was and ever will to do the US bidding is another story, the fact remains that Chanakya Kotelia (375 BCE-283 BCE), the Brahmin Hindu sage's cunning writings on statecraft, to this day guide Indian policy formulation,

Year 2025 has seen immense turbulence. Since Donald Trump's formal inauguration as President of the United States, 60% of international development funds have been slashed, immigration controls in the West have multiplied exponentially, trade barriers have gone up, AI has wiped out hundreds of thousands of jobs, the Palestinian genocide has entered its final phase, and conflicts involving nuclear powers have intensified. In the words of Antonio Gramsci, "The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters."

Pakistan's failure to timely regulate the entry of satellite internet providers is yet another example of policy paralysis stifling progress. In a country where millions still lack reliable internet access, especially in remote and underserved regions, the arrival of satellite-based internet should have marked a turning point. Instead, we are once again caught reacting to circumstances that could - and should - have been anticipated.

One month has passed since the Sindh government imposed a ban on the manufacturing, sale and use of plastic bags across the province but adherence to the ban can barely be seen. Although the government is claiming that teams from district administration, police and Sindh Environmental Protection Agency have been deployed to effectuate what is a 'zero-tolerance' policy, as stated by Environment Secretary Agha Shahnawaz Khan, the strategy appears to be more focused on rhetoric than practical implementation.

The 12-day war between Iran and Israel must have convinced the Iranian regime that only in the possession of a nuclear bomb lies the security and deterrence of their country. Had it possessed a bomb it is most unlikely that Israel would have launched an attack on it on the 13th of June 2025. In an interview with Karan Thapar, the internationally renowned award winning columnist Gideon Levy stated that in case Iran possessed a bomb just as in the case of North Korea and Pakistan it would've provided a guarantee and deterrence against a nuclear attack by an adversary.

Negligence by public institutions continues to cost lives in Pakistan. The deaths of 14 people — 10 of them from the same family — who were swept away by a flash flood in the Swat River on June 27 were not the result of an unforeseeable act of nature. They were the direct consequence of administrative failure. An inquiry ordered by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has confirmed that multiple government departments failed to perform even their most basic duties.
