The inflated power bills triggered nationwide protests, including Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Multan, Gujranwala, and Peshawar. In Karachi, the Jamaat-e-Islami held demonstrations at multiple places against the skyrocketing increase in power bills and what it said overcharging on part of the K-Electric (KE). In Rawalpindi, protesters gathered at Committee Chowk and burned bills while demanding that the government abolish imposed taxes on electricity. Also in Peshawar, power consumers called the increase in electricity bills unbearable and demanded immediate relief from the government.

In Gujranwala, Protesters surrounded the Gujranwala Electric Power Company office in protest against expensive electricity. Protests were also held in other cities, including Narowal, Attock, Sargodha, and Haripur, against high power bills. The protests in Multan were emotionally charged. They tied their electricity bills to donkeys as they marched towards the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) while chanting slogans against the government.

People took to the streets against exorbitant power bills in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa complaining the increase in electricity tariff amid record inflation has added to their misery.

They blocked roads, set fire to power bills and announced they would challenge the “injustice” by the public utility in the court of law.

Members of the business community in Peshawar demonstrated in Gulbahar, Kohati Gate, Shaheen Muslim Town, Paharipura and Warsak Road areas for the fourth consecutive day.

Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party President Abdul Aleem Khan has stated that the people’s patience has run out due to the record increase in electricity bills.

In response to the public reaction on electricity bills, the IPP chief says inflation has caused instability in every household.

“People’s grievances are natural. If relief is not given, the scope of the protests will expand,” Khan said, adding that the economic exploitation of the people by failed rulers of the past should be taken into account.

The IPP cannot leave the deprived sections of society alone in such a critical situation, he stressed.

As per details, the JI consultation meeting decided to hold protests in markets at the same time across Karachi.

The meeting also announced that in the next step, the JI will hold a sit-in out governor house and shutter down protests in Karachi markets.

Former finance minister Miftah Ismail has claimed that without seeking permission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the incumbent government could not extend relief to masses who are feeling the heat of the inflated electricity bills.

Following mass protests against the exorbitant electricity bills across the country, the former minister said the caretaker government would seek IMF approval before providing relief to electricity consumers, who are using 200 to 300 units monthly.

In Pakistan, he said the electricity rate touched record levels and situation could be eased if the government would abolish sales tax from the electricity bills. However, he said the government had to meet the tax collection target.

“If sales tax is removed from electricity bills, then where will it be collected from?”

"If the government avoids imposing ST on property, agriculture and services sector, it will shift it to the poor, which is being done, the former minister observed.

He urged the leadership of political parties across the board to devise a strategy to collect tax from the rich, adding that taxes are not meant for just the poor.

“Contracts made in 1994 and 2002 have expired, hence, new contracts should be signed to produce cheaper electricity,” the minister suggested.
