Islam and Secularism
Written twenty years ago, this is a book by one of the most creative and original Muslim thinkers in the contemporary Muslim world. The author deals with fundamental problems faced by contemporary Muslims and their real solutions, beginning with a discussion on ‘The Contemporary Western Christian Background’, followed by his analysis of the concepts (which he newly defines) of ‘secular’, `secularization’ and ‘secularism.’ Based on all the preceding explanation, he proceeds to analyze the Muslim `dilemma’ by declaring that it should be resolved primarily through what he calls the “de-westernization of knowledge” or, conversely, the “islamization of contemporary knowledge”, an original concept conceived of and argued for by the author for the past three decades. Numerous original and profound ideas are contained in this book— arrived at chiefly through critical study of Muslim tradition— such as the concepts of Din, `adl, hikmah, adab, ma`na (meaning), and ta’dib, and their significance in the development of an Islamic system of education.

The present work seeks to examine the political, social and religious role of the Muslims in Mughal India from 1707 to 1762. Politically, it covers the two phases of the decline and disintegration of the Mughal Empire i.e. from the death of Awrangzib to the invasion of Nadir Shah (1707-1739), and from the departure of Nadir Shah to the third battle of Panipat (1739-1761). The first period is marked by efforts, although traditional and fruitless, to inject new vigour into tht body-politic of the Mughal empire. In the second period, while the Mughal Empire rapidly disintegrated, it also witnessed the rise of many dynamic leaders in northern India and the Deccan in whom contemporary Indian Muslims placed their hopes and expectations for the future. The low state to which the political, economic and social life of Delhi had sunk naturally turned the attention of both the Hindus and the Muslims to religion. A number of Muslim religious leaders called for a return of true Islam, and of these decidedly the most important was Shah Wali-Allah The present work studies the ideas and milieu of Shah Wali-Allah through ten chapters: Mughal Imperial Traditions; The Eighteenth Century Scramble for Political Domination; Eighteenth Century Muslim Society; Shah Wali-Allah and his Ancestors; Religious Mission of Shah Wali-Allah; The Political and Social Thoughts of Shah Wali-Allah; Mira Mazhar Jan i Janan; Eighteenth Century Chishtiyya Leadership in Delhi; Eighteenth Century Teaching Methods and Syllabus.

THE TAO OF ISLAM -A Sourcebook on Gender Relationship in Islamic Thought
This is a genuine foundational work in Islamic studies, an open door into the very heart of Islamic civilization. It suggests the bases of important comparisons and insights for those interested in cognate areas in Western cultures. The Tao of Islam is a rich and diverse anthology of Islamic teachings on the nature of the relationships between God and the world, the world and the human being, and the human being and God. Focusing on gender symbolism, Sachiko Murata shows that Muslim authors frequently analyse the divine reality and its connection with the cosmic and human domains with a view toward a complementarity or polarity of principles that is analogous to the Chinese idea of yin/yang. Murata believes that the unity of Islamic thought is found, not so much in the ideas discussed, as in the types of relationships that are set up among realities. She pays particular attention to the view of various figures commonly known as “Sufis” and “philosophers,” since they approach these topics with a flexibility and subtlety not found in other schools of thought. She translates several hundred pages, most for the first time, from more than thirty important Muslims including the Ikhwan al-Safa, Avicenna, and Ibn al-`Arabi.

VOICES OF ISLAM

Despite frequent and extensive publications on Islam, very few Americans, indeed very few non-Muslims, truly understand the faith or the more than one billion adherents who live it. This set presents the diversity and richness of Islam, filling in the blanks and expanding our knowledge and understanding. Portraying Muslims in all their humanity and diversity balances the images that have bombarded society and presents the reader with a fuller and more accurate picture of the Islamic faith and what it means to live as a Muslim— in Muslim communities, and as part of a broader tapestry of pluralism in the nations of the world.
What does it mean to share MuSlim concerns? To experience Muslim spirituality? What is the difference between Sunni and Shiite sects? Why do Muslims pray so frequently? What is the reality of Muslim marriage and gender relations? What is the meaning of jihad and martyrdom to a practicing Muslim? ,What role do the arts and humanities play in modem Muslim life? How are Islamic children raised? These questions and others are answered in these volumes, which bring together Muslim voices from around the world, including men and women, scholars and laypersons, fundamentalists and progressives, and others from various cultural, political, and Islamic backgrounds. Personal experiences and poetry are induded to illustrate the many different expressions of Islam.
Because non-Muslims do not share a personal commitment to the Islamic faith, they are not in the best position to convey a sense of what it means to be a Muslim on the inside— to live a Muslim life, to share Muslim values and concerns, and to experience Islam spiritually. In the final analysis, only Muslims can fully bear witness to their own traditions from within.
The five-volume set of Voices of Islam is an attempt to meet this need. By bringing together the voices of nearly fifty prominent Muslims from around the world, it aims to present an accurate, comprehensive, and accessible account of Islamic doctrines, practices, and worldviews for a general reader at the senior high school and university undergraduate level. The subjects of the volumes— Voices of Tradition; Voices of the Spirit; Voices of Life: Family, Home, and Society, Voices of Art, Beauty, and Science; and Voices of Change were selected to provide as wide a depiction as possible of Muslim experiences and ways of knowledge. Taken collectively, the chapters in these volumes provide bridges between formal religion and culture, the present and the past, tradition and change, and spiritual and outward action that can be crossed by readers, whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims, many times and in a variety of ways.

(Kitāb al-Hikam by Ibn ‘Atāullah)

SUFI API-IORISMS (Kitdb al-Hikam by Ibn `Ataullah) Victor Danner This attractive and eloquent little volume is one of the great basic texts of Islamic mysticism. A collection of 262 aphorisms that constitute a masterful summary of the truths of the Sufi Path, it combines the profound Sufi teachings and real charm of language that characterises the Hikam. The book unfolds the integral Sufi doctrine on all levels in a manner calculated to appeal to pious Muslims in general. It can be likened to a necklace of precious jewels. The jewel like independence of many of the aphorisms has conferred upon them, in the course of centuries, an existence of their own, and a fame of their own. Nevertheless it is illuminative gnosis, or ma`rifah, that constitutes the inner thread holding the many jewels in place and giving to the work its underlying perspective and unity.

CREATION AND THE TIMELESS ORDER OF THINGS Essays in Islamic Mystical Philosophy Toshihiko Izutsu Creation and the Timeless Order of Things brings together Toshihiko Izutsu’s most important essays on Islamic mystical philosophy. Though primarily concerned with Iranian mystics and philosophers, it displays Izutsu’s unique insights in comparative philosophy by comparing and contrasting Islamic Sufism with Vedanta, Mahayana Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, Archetypal Psychology, and modern Existentialism. The studies in this volume explore the deep structures of mystical insight particularly as developed around the key concepts of the unity of existence, “creation” and “being” within Islamic mystical philosophy. For this edition, his detailed article on “The Fundamental Structure of Sabzawari’s Metaphysics” has been added to the volume.

Semantics of the Qur’ānic Weltanschauung

GOD AND MAN IN THE QUR’AN Semantics of the Qur’anic Weltanschauung Toshihiko Izutsu • God and Man in the Qur’an constitutes not only a welcome addition to the existing literature on Islam but introduces a new approach to the understanding of Islam— particularly by non-Muslims— the linguistic approach. This book, coming from the pen of the first serious Japanese scholar on Islam, discovers the substantive structure of the Queanic teachings in a fourfold relationship between God and man, viz., (i) God is the creator of man; (ii) He communicates His Will to man through Revelation; (iii) there subsists a Lord-servant relationship between God and man and (iv) the concept of God as the God of goodness and mercy (for those who are thankful to Him) and the God of wrath (for those who reject Him). Dr Izutsu’s description of the historical evolution of these concepts in pre-Islamic Arabia upto the appearance of Islam is quite rich and valuable.
“Combining the tools and method of semantics and the insight and vision of true philosophy, Professor Izutsu has made a fascinating excursus into the Islamic world-view as enshrined in the Qur’an. Deploying a wide range of material, God and Man in the Qur’an presents us with an inspiring example of the thematic approach to Quednic exegesis.” — Mohamed El-Tahir El-Mesawi, Int. Islamic University, Malaysia

ETHICO-RELIGIOUS CONCEPTS IN THE QUR’ĀN

ETHICO-RELIGIOUS CONCEPTS IN THE QUR’A.N Toshihiko Izutsu In Ethico-Religious Concepts in the Qur’an, Toshihiko Izutsu provides a masterful and lucid exposition of the Quednic teachings. At the time of its original publication in 1959 as The Structure of Ethical Terms in the Koran— revised under the current title in 1966— it was one of the first studies of the Queanic worldview to have appeared in a Western language and its importance has not changed with the passage of time. Ethico-Religious Concepts consists of three parts: an exposition of the methodological principles of semantic analysis; the relation, positive and negative, that exists between the pre-Islamic tribal moral code and the Islamic— in our particular case, Qur’anic— ethics; and an analysis, by a consistent application of the methodological rules explained in the first section, of the major ethico-religious concepts in the Qur’an.

In these recent years, Islam has captured the attention of the West and has baffled it. Among all the world’s religions, it is only Islam that is not just surviving but also flourishing. Yet many people know little about Islam and regard its continuing attraction as something of a mystery. This book presents a thorough introduction to Muslim belief, history and culture for readers with little or no prior understanding of Islam and deals not only with topical issues, such as ‘fundamentalism’ and the status of Muslim women, but provides an overview of the Qur’an, the Prophet, Islamic history, the development of sects, and the nature of Muslim art and literature. The author goes beyond the standard judgements of journalism and Orientalist scholarship, to show the Muslim faith for what it is: not merely a system of beliefs and rituals, but an entire way of life. Unbiased yet passionate, the book offers an `unveiling’ which must be heeded if the present mutual incomprehension between East and West is to be overcome.

EARLY SUFI WOMEN – (Dhikr an-Niswa al-Muta ‘abbidāt as-Sūfiyyāt by Abu ‘Abd al-Rahmān as-Sulami)
This work is a translation of the long-lost Dhikr an-Niswat al-muta’abbideit as-sufistit (Book of Sufi Women), the influential work on Sufi women saints by Abu `Abd ar-Rahman as-Sulami (d. 1021), that was thought lost until 1991, when a unique manuscript of the work was found in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia which dates to the year 1084, only sixty-three year after the death of Sulami himself. This makes it one of the earliest manuscripts of Sulami’s works in existence arid the earliest work on Sufi women to appear in the Islamic hagiographical tradition. The work contains notices on eighty-four women and provides a picture of independent female spirituality in Islam that calls into question many long-held myths about the status of women in the Muslim world. Not only does Sufi spirituality possess a marked feminine dimension, but throughout the centuries numerous women in different areas of the Islamic world have participated in the spiritual teachings of Sufism. This classical work of Sulami is a precious testament to the role of women in the Sufi tradition in the past and to female spirituality in Islam in general. Rkia Cornell has meticulously translated and annotated this rich document, and her introduction clarifies the importance of the text in relation to the extensive writings of its author Sulami. …But the real payoff of this detailed scholarship has been to reveal this gem of feminine spirituality to a new audience.

Sufis of Andalusia –
(The Rūh al-Quds and Durrat al-Fākhirah by Ibn ‘Arabi)
This book comprises biographical sketches describing the lives and teaching of some Sufi masters of the 12-13’h centuries from Muslim Spain and North Africa. The sketches come from two manuscript works by a great Muslim mystic, the celebrated Sufi, Muhyi al-Din Ibn ‘Arabi, of whose life and work there is a brief account in the introduction. The book provides, in a most inspiring way, many insights into the teachings and practices pf the Sufis, whose deep spiritual experience provided the foundation of devotional life in Islam. Ibn `Arabi’s sketches invite us to become acquainted with some of the greatest souls of his time, to sense some measure of their sanctity and to wonder at their unswerving and rigorous dedication. The material has been edited and compiled with great skill to make for easy reading of these two important sources, here translated into English for the first time. There is adequate notation for the reader quite unfamiliar with Muslim practices and customs, as well as for the student reading in depth.

REVELATION OF THE MYSTERY
(Kashf al-Mahjūb by ‘Alī Al-Hujwīri)
Al-Hujwiri was one of the greatest saints and writers of Sufism. He is most famous for his work Revelation of Mystery, or Kashf al-Mahjab which has been revered by students of Sufism for nine centuries. This seminal book began Sufism’s rich literary history in the Persian language. It is a distillation of the teachings and lore of the Sufism of Al-Hujwiri’s time, but its wisdom is eternal. This translation of the most ancient and celebrated Persian treatise on Sufism will be found useful not only by the small number of students familiar with the subject at first hand, but also for the general readers who are interested in the general history of mysticism. Its object is to set forth a complete system of Sufism, not to put together a great number of sayings by different Shaykhs, but to discuss and expound the doctrines and practices of the Sufis. Even the biographical section of the work is largely expository. Before stating his own view the author generally examines the current opinions on the same topic and refutes them if necessary. Hujwiri discusses various themes related to the spiritual path, including knowledge, union, purity, prayer and love and offers the spiritual seeker universal and timeless advice on such subjects as contemplation, generosity spiritual courtesy and false teachers from the real, a discernment just and important in our time.
