The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) has decided to award up to 15% additional marks to the students of pre-engineering, pre-medical, and general science part I. The decision was made upon the orders of Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar.

The caretaker CM approved the recommendations of the fact-finding committee, which was constituted to investigate intermediate part-I students’ getting unusually low marks this year.

The BIEK in-charge IT section was removed from his post in light of the report submitted by the committee to the CM. According to Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar, the decision to award up to 15% extra marks to students of pre-engineering, pre-medical, and general science was made upon the recommendation of the committee.

“It has been decided that all the students would be given 15 extra marks in Maths, 12 in Physics, Chemistry, and Statistics each, and six in Zoology and Botany each,” he said. The committee recommended making paper patterns and a marking scheme before the start of the academic year.

It said that these patterns and schemes would remain in effect for three years. The caretaker CM ordered the officials to increase the number of paper inspection centers to 10 in Karachi.

Health ministry has imposed a ban on sugary drinks during its meetings, aiming to promote healthier beverage choices among staff and officials.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, the decision stems from the recognition of the harmful effects of sweet drinks on health.

In alignment with this directive, all institutions under the Ministry of Health are now prohibited from consuming sugary drinks.

Caretaker Health Minister Dr. Nadeem Jan has issued an advisory emphasizing the link between sugary drinks and both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Gaza’s largest functioning hospital was under siege on Friday in Israel’s war with Hamas, leaving patients and doctors helpless in the chaos as warplanes struck Rafah, the last refuge for Palestinians in the enclave, officials said.

Israeli forces remained in Nasser Hospital in the town of Khan Younis after raiding it early Thursday.

The Gaza Health Ministry said five intensive care patients died on Friday due to power outages and lack of oxygen supply caused by the attack. Israel said it moved into the hospital because Hamas militants were hiding there.

The Israeli military said on Friday its troops detained more than 20 militants in the hospital who participated in the October 7 attacks on Israel and dozens of others for questioning. Hamas denies there were militants in the hospital, describing the claim as “lies aimed to cover up for destroying hospitals.

In a recent announcement, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) unveiled data indicating a notable growth in textile and clothing exports for the second consecutive month in January.

The sector recorded a robust increase of 10.10 per cent, with exports reaching $1.45 billion compared to $1.32 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year. This positive momentum was further highlighted by a month-on-month growth rate of 3.33 per cent.

Despite this recent surge, a closer look at the performance in the fiscal year 2024’s first seven months reveals a contrasting trend. Textile and clothing exports experienced a decline of 2.99 per cent, amounting to $9.73 billion as opposed to $10.03 billion in the same period last year.

Analysts attribute this contraction to mounting production costs, primarily driven by increased energy expenses and a prevalent liquidity crunch in the industry. The sustainability of the recent upswing remains uncertain, raising questions about the sector’s future performance in the upcoming months.

While the Ministry of Commerce had previously announced measures to address challenges faced by textile exporters, including regionally competitive energy prices and the resolution of cash flow issues through the release of pending sales tax refunds, these initiatives are yet to be implemented.

Industry insiders are keenly observing the unfolding developments, anticipating the potential impact of the proposed government interventions. The sector awaits concrete actions to mitigate challenges and foster a more conducive environment for sustained growth.

Former US president and presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday advertised a pair of golden sneakers at “Sneaker Con.”

“I’ve wanted to do this a long time,” the former president said when he announced the launch of a sneaker line. The convention is held in the city of Philadelphia in the northeastern state of Pennsylvania.

The shoes, called “The Never Surrender High-Tops,” are to be sold at a price of $399 (€370). The website selling the shoes says it has no connection to Trump’s electoral campaign.

“The Never Surrender sneakers are your rally cry in shoe form. Lace-up and step out ready to conquer,” the website says, referring to the shoes as a “true collector’s item” that is “bold, gold and tough, just like President Trump.”

The politician’s appearance was met with a mix of boos and chants of “USA!” from the audience. Trump is likely to face off against incumbent President Joe Biden on November 5, with both candidates poised to receive their respective parties’ nominations.

Trump was defeated by Biden in 2021 after the Republican politician’s first term as president. His biggest competitor for the Republican nomination, Nikki Haley, trails far behind Trump in opinion polls.

In a recent development, an anti-terrorism tribunal has sanctioned post-detention bail for 16 individuals implicated in the turmoil surrounding the Jinnah House attack that unfolded during the upheavals on May 9.

Presided over by Judge Naveed Iqbal, the tribunal greenlit the bail requests of the 16 individuals, contingent upon the provision of surety bonds.

This decision comes amidst a backdrop of over 200 additional bail petitions, the hearings for which have been adjourned until February 19, as per a report by Dawn News on Sunday.

Among the beneficiaries of this ruling are Khawar Hussain Butt, Farrukh Azeem, Zaheer Arshad, Muhammad Zeeshan, Muhammad Arshad, Saleem Ahmad, Syed Asghar Ali, Javed Hussain, Muhammad Ramzan, Mohsin Ashiq, Umar Shahzad, and Nadeem Abbas.

In a separate legal matter, Judge Naveed Iqbal deferred the proceedings concerning a bail plea filed by Sanam Javed, a social media activist affiliated with the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, implicated in the Shadman police station assault case. The adjournment transpired as the prosecution failed to present the requisite case records during the hearing.

China’s ambitious plans to establish a lunar base within the next five years represent a significant milestone in the global space exploration arena.

The initiative, as reported by Chinese media, underscores the nation’s commitment to advancing its space capabilities and expanding human presence beyond Earth. Key to China’s lunar base vision is the utilization of lunar soil as a primary resource for construction.

By leveraging indigenous materials, such as regolith, China aims to overcome logistical challenges associated with transporting building materials from Earth, thereby reducing costs and increasing sustainability.

The proposed use of a specialized robot, dubbed the “Chinese Super Masons,” highlights China’s innovative approach to lunar construction technology. This robot, designed to autonomously produce bricks from lunar soil, represents a crucial step towards realizing the vision of a habitable lunar outpost.

Furthermore, China’s strategic timeline, including the Chang’e-8 mission around 2028 and the planned return of lunar soil from the far side of the moon by 2025, underscores the nation’s methodical approach to lunar exploration and base construction.

By incrementally advancing its capabilities and gathering essential data from previous missions, China is positioning itself as a leading player in lunar exploration.

The significance of establishing a lunar base extends beyond mere scientific curiosity. Indeed, as highlighted by Ding Lieyun and other experts at the Extraterrestrial Construction Conference in Wuhan, a lunar habitat holds immense potential for enabling long-term human exploration and habitation of the moon.

By establishing a research station on the lunar surface, China aims to lay the groundwork for sustained lunar missions, potentially paving the way for future crewed missions to Mars and beyond.

Moreover, China’s commitment to international collaboration, as evidenced by its participation in conferences such as the one at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, signals a willingness to engage with the global space community in pursuit of common goals.

New York Judge Arthur Engoron criticised Donald Trump's eldest daughter, Ivanka Trump, in his ruling that ordered the former United States president to pay $354.9 million in damages on Friday after finding him liable for business fraud.

Engoron denounced Ivanka's "inconsistent recall" in the case involving her father, adult brothers — Donald Jr and Eric — and the Trump Organization.

Despite documentary evidence, she denied knowledge of key events. Ivanka was initially listed as a defendant, but this was dropped in June 2023 due to a statute of limitations.

Aiming Ivanka, Engoron wrote: "She consistently denied recalling the contents of documentary evidence that confirmed that she actively participated in events, even after she was confronted with the evidence."

He later added: "The Court found her inconsistent recall, depending on whether she was questioned by OAG [New York attorney general's office] or the defence, suspect.

"In any event, what Ms Trump cannot recall is memorialised in contemporaneous emails and documents; in the absence of her memory, the documents speak for themselves."

Ivanka was asked about her recollection of negotiations involving the Old Post Office in Washington, DC, which Trump purchased and turned into a hotel. She was also asked about her involvement in negotiations concerning the Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami, Florida, which her father had purchased.

Engoron found Donald Trump liable for business fraud in September 2023, claiming he lied about property value to secure better bank loans and tax agreements.

Amid allegations of manipulation of results in the February 8 elections, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has urged Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa to take suo moto notice over the alleged rigging in the polls.

In a letter addressed to the CJP, PTI spokesperson Shoaib Shaheen has sought the apex judge's action over alleged rigging in NA-47 and NA-48 constituencies which, according to him, will prove to be a first drop of rain for supremacy of the Constitution, rule of law, ensuring fundamental rights as well promoting democracy in the country.

The February 8 polls have been marred by allegations of rigging with the PTI, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and others complaining of fraud results in various constituencies across the country.

A day earlier, Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha made shocking revelations of abetting large-scale electoral rigging while hurling serious allegations against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja and the CJP.

"We converted the losers into winners with a 50,000 votes margin,” he said during a press conference at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium while tendering his resignation and surrendering himself before the authorities. Reacting to the accusations, CJP Isa demanded evidence of his involvement in the rigging of the February 8 elections. "You level baseless allegations.

There is no truth to it nor is evidence presented," the top judge said in a statement. Shaheen, in his letter to the chief justice, narrated the details of alleged rigging in the NA-47 constituency stressing that as per Form 45, he secured 104,578 votes to win by a margin of 53,000 votes.
