Bison, buffalo and bison are different animals. Buffaloes are found in Africa and Asia, bison in North America, and bison in Europe. All of them belong to the family of bovids, but there is no close relationship between them.

By the horns it is impossible to determine whether the buffalo is male or female, but you can determine their age. In both sexes, horns appear around the age of two. They then enter a stage called "spike-horn" when the horns develop at a 45-degree angle. This continues until about four years of age. The horns start out black but turn gray with age. Adult antlers curl upwards and their tips become blunt and short after about eight years of age.

In 1825, the last buffalo east of the Mississippi were killed on the Allegheny Plateau. Between 1830 and 1860, wagon after wagon stuffed with buffalo skins arrived on the East Coast of the United States.

The ancestor of bison is considered to be a wild bull from the genus Leptobos, who lived in the Pliocene. This Eurasian proto-bison was native to India and spread north. In the wide Asian steppes it evolved into the steppe bison (Bison priscus).

Bison are the largest land animals in North America. An adult male can reach 1.8-2 meters in height and 2.5-3 meters in length. Females are usually smaller: 2.2-3 meters in length and 1.5 meters in height. The bison weighs from 800 to 1150 kg.
