🇬🇧 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 16

Dover, morning. The hotel dates from 1834 and is a listed building, so the doors are crooked and so is the floor. After last night's ferry, it fits;) The car is packed, but we're not leaving yet, because I've got something to send. Emi has a cappuccino in the lounge, I send.

Then the motorway west and the Prince of Wales Bridge over the Severn. Wales on the other side: white houses, narrow roads, a castle by the road and ARAF painted on the tarmac. It's Welsh for slow, and they add the English just in case. The further west, the emptier, mist coming down on the hills, sheep watching us, us watching them.

At dusk a stone cottage near Aberystwyth, lights in the windows, we unload. Home for the rally.

The road says ARAF. Sixteen days in, it sounds like advice.

🇵🇱 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 16

Dover, poranek.

Potem autostrada na zachód i Prince of Wales Bridge nad Severn.

🇬🇧 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 15

It mostly rains while we're driving, so I'm not complaining;) Six hundred kilometres of motorway ahead, Bremen to Dunkirk. We take turns at the wheel, driving and working in shifts.

In Dunkirk we have two hours before the ferry and go looking for food. At six the whole town is shut, but one restaurant is open, with a view and a meal you don't forget. An hour before sailing we run into a raised lifting bridge. We turn back and go the long way round. At the first booth a man tells us check-in has closed and the next ferry is at midnight. He suggests we drive on anyway, there's a chance they'll still take us. We drive on board! We made it.

Two hours across the Channel, the clocks back an hour, and it's dark when we roll off.

We're in Britain. From here there's one rule: keep left.

🇵🇱 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 15

W Dunkierce mamy dwie godziny do promu i szukamy czegoś do jedzenia. Godzina do wypłynięcia i trafiamy na podniesiony most zwodzony.

🇬🇧 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 14

We leave Copenhagen and cut straight across Denmark. Emi drives, my office rides on the back seat;) Two stops planned along the way.

An old ferry sits at the first one. She's called Broen, Danish for The Bridge. In the 1950s car ferries looked like the final answer, so they called her the floating bridge. She was named after the thing that would end her era half a century later. An hour on we're driving that bridge, eighteen kilometres over the water. Then Christiansfeld, a Moravian town from 1773, and honey cakes baked to a recipe from 1783.

We reach Bremen in the evening, in the rain. Schnoor and the market square get seen in the dark and in a hurry.

Denmark crossed end to end in a day. Tomorrow, the ferry to England.

🇵🇱 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 14

Opuszczamy Kopenhagę i przecinamy Danię w poprzek.

Potem Christiansfeld, miasteczko braci morawskich z 1773 roku, i pierniki według przepisu z 1783.

Do Bremy dojeżdżamy wieczorem, w deszczu. Schnoor i rynek oglądamy po ciemku i w pośpiechu.

Dania przejechana w poprzek w jeden dzień. Jutro prom do Anglii.

🇬🇧 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 13

We leave Linköping in the rain. We got lucky at the rally, it rained for exactly five minutes. Then twenty minutes on the ferry to Denmark, with a wind that won't let up. Ashore it's pouring again, so we drive straight to the hotel.

In the evening the forecast promises a dry night. We go out without umbrellas, which after a day like this is an act of faith;) Copenhagen in a few hours: Tivoli, Gammel Strand, Bishop Absalon, the stork fountain. And Borgen, the only building in the world that houses a parliament, a supreme court and a prime minister's office.

We had half an evening for Copenhagen. Next time we're taking the boat.

🇵🇱 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 13

🇬🇧 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 12

East Sweden Rally, day two. The weather isn't helping, but at least the rain has stopped, and the spot we've picked has options. We spread out along the stage and plan the next shots straight away, because we'll be back here on the following loop. At the start line I film the cars leaving and the crews' faces: one minute per crew, two on gravel. I really like this part of the game. Jari-Matti Latvala warms up before the stage, jumping on the spot, and throws a line at me: activate the muscles and the mind. Wiktor goes the furthest out, drone in the air and a camera in hand, and as always he ends up with the most to choose from. By the afternoon the gravel has dried and the dust is finally up, and slow motion never gets old.

At the finish by the Saab Arena in Linköping, in a town where Saab builds aircraft, the win goes to Jari-Matti Latvala and Erno Kinnunen in the Toyota Celica. Fifteen stages, fifteen stage wins.

Second rally of three, done. Wales is 2,000 kilometres, two ferries and eighteen kilometres of bridge away.

🇵🇱 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 12

Jari-Matti Latvala rozgrzewa się przed odcinkiem, podskakuje w miejscu i rzuca do mnie: activate the muscles and the mind.

Do Walii zostało 2000 kilometrów, dwa promy i osiemnaście kilometrów mostu.

🇬🇧 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 11

East Sweden Rally, day one. There are three of us now - in the morning I picked up Wiktor from the airport, and he's taking over the drone. On the stages we split three ways: Emi goes one way, I go the other, and Wiktor is somewhere in the middle with the bird's eye view. His shots are killer. We make the fourth stage with seconds to spare: corner exit and a bump on the straight in the frame. We check into the remote service right on time. B-roll, interviews - and Jari-Matti Latvala tells us he spotted our low-flying drone waiting behind a corner. To end the day, Olda Kovarik tests his dust-blowing kit on me, and back at our place Emi cooks bolognese with alloy wheels;)

Day one done. Another one tomorrow.

🇵🇱 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 11

Jutro kolejny.

🇬🇧 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 10

Moving on: just over 300 km to the Linköping area. The back seat is good for editing - the windows are tinted. We've rented a little house in the countryside: beautiful farm buildings, peace and quiet, great conditions for work. You can tell it's day ten of the trip - we're doing laundry and cooking;) Accreditation pickup at the Saab Arena, and on the way we catch a girls' hockey team at practice. Funny thing - I've never seen ice hockey live. In the evening a Czech flag shows the way: Olda Kovarik invited everyone to a garden party after the recce. We're probably the last to arrive. The atmosphere at FIA EHRC rallies is always great.

Tomorrow East Sweden Rally begins. Rally number two.

🇵🇱 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 10

Zmieniamy miejsce: nieco ponad 300 km w okolice Linköping.

Rajd numer dwa.

🇬🇧 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 8

Stockholm starts for us 40 metres underground - the Stockholm City platforms are carved into granite, and the metro here is called the world's longest art gallery. Above the station, Sweden's largest department store: from the platform to the shops without ever stepping outside. A dangerous city;) Up top, Gamla Stan: lanes in shades of ochre, craft shops and antique stores, until water glints between the houses. At Stortorget, the city's oldest square, we drink coffee in a place that remembers the bloodbath of 1520 - legend says the 82 white stones on the facade stand for the victims. Then the waterfront, Djurgarden and Strandvagen with yachts at the quay. And from the green museum island we bring back one more story: a ship that sailed just 1300 metres. That one deserves its own film.

Two days of Stockholm in one episode. Tomorrow we're back on the road.

🇵🇱 Nordic To Wales Trip / Day 8

Dwa dni Sztokholmu w jednym odcinku. Jutro wracamy na trasę.
