To someone who hasn’t visited all three Baltic countries, they might seem alike at first glance – small nations with a Soviet past. But while Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania do have a common history, EU ties, and the daily uncertainty of living next to a powerful neighbor with big ambitions, it’s the differences that truly shine. Each has its own soul, its own rhythm – from the architecture to how they dream about the future, and especially in the people: different in every country, but equally beautiful and fascinating.

Thank you ALL (Apollo Raamatud, Rahva Raamat, JĀNIS ROZE, Globus, UAB "Humanitas", Knygynas eureka!) for the conversations, the stories, the insights, and for sharing a bit of yourselves.

And if you, people, haven’t been here yet – maybe it’s time to add the Baltics to your to-do list for this or next year. Or at least, pick up a book ;))

Yesterday, the second round of the presidential election took place in Poland, and the right-wing candidate won - by less than 1% of the vote. It shows just how polarized Poland, and much of Europe, has become. My country is divided by a vertical line - to the left of it are liberal, left-leaning voters; to the right - far-right supporters. In the U.S., this dividing line is more horizontal. What does the situation look like in your countries?

This time my feet - helped a little by an airplane - took me to the Balkans. Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia are true oases of readership, adorned with breathtaking views and a complex history that has shaped the personalities of their beautiful inhabitants. I'm lucky to be able to come here every year to soak up some positive energy from this vibrant region. And to develop atherosclerosis - damn ćevapčići and pljeskavica!

Le Pen’s conviction in France: Career-ending or fuel for a new far right?

On Monday, a Paris court sentenced Marine Le Pen, the head of France’s far-right National Rally (RN), to four years in prison and barred her from holding public office for five years, effectively eliminating her from the 2027 presidential race.

Marine Le Pen’s conviction has sparked a political upheaval, sending shockwaves through French politics and shaping the broader debate on democracy in the West. The ruling reinforces a growing narrative - championed by the US administration - that Western political systems have been hijacked by elites, tilting them against the interests of ordinary citizens.

Populist movements on both sides of the Atlantic stand to benefit. From Viktor Orbán and Matteo Salvini to Geert Wilders and Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, far-right leaders have quickly rallied behind Le Pen, condemning what they perceive as a breach of democratic principles. Donald Trump Jr. echoed this sentiment on X, arguing that the case validates JD Vance’s remarks at the Munich Security Conference, where the US vice president suggested that Europe was suppressing populist opposition.
