The Eurasian lynx is a feline predator in Europe and, accordingly, in Ukraine. It still plays an important role in the ecosystems of the remote forests of the Carpathian Mountains and Polissya.

Until the 19th century, the lynx was found in most of our continent, including the plains.

But the reduction of forest areas, the transformation of forests and the relentless hunting of lynx led to a critical decrease in numbers in some countries and the complete disappearance of the species in others. For example, in Hungary between 1915 and 1983 not a single lynx was recorded, so it was included in the list of extinct animals.

Today in Ukraine there are about 400 lynxes. They are found in Polissya and in the Carpathians. — says the representative of WWF in Ukraine and the transnational project "LIFE EuroLargeCarnivores" Bogdan Vyhor. - There is a popular myth that the lynx is dangerous to humans and can harm them. In fact, a lynx avoids a person, and only an animal wounded by a hunter can be dangerous. Officially, hunting for rare lynx in Ukraine is strictly prohibited and punishable by the current legislation, but cases of lynx poaching are repeated, and even, unfortunately, among the employees of national parks who are supposed to protect it.”

The lynx got its Latin name - Lynx lynx (from the Greek λύγξ - "light", "shine") because of its sharp eyesight. The ancient Greeks believed that the lynx was able to see through objects. The Polish astronomer Jan Hevelius named the constellation after the lynx in 1690. He explained the choice of the name as follows: “Only small stars are found in this part of the sky, and you need to have lynx eyes to distinguish and recognize them.”
