Sewer Dwellers - Letting No Sin Abide // Kompozycja, Produkcja, Nagranie 🎤

To jeden z tych numerów na potrzebę których trzeba było uzbroić się w mocną referencję - tym razem padło na bliskowschodnie tematy i soundtrack do pierwszej Diuny. Podczas produkcji wokali wyobrażaliśmy sobie jedną scenę: płonące miasto, absolutnie zmasakrowane przez najeźdźców. To wyobrażenie pozwoliło nam uchwycić pewien klimat grozy i dramatu, którego poszukiwaliśmy w performance Kuby. Atmosferę podkreśla produkcja pełna rozwiąń typowych dla soundtracków. Użyłem w niej potężnych filmowych bębnów taiko, sitaru i sekcji dętej, która podnosi poziom patosu o 200%. Poszukiwania odpowiednich sampli doprowadziły mnie też do instrumentów, których do tej pory nie znałem, na przykład Berimbau.

Jaka z tego lekcja? Spróbuj wyobrażać sobie sceny, do których produkowana przez Ciebie muzyka mogłaby być soundtrackiem. Mi pomaga to znaleźć odpowiednie rozwiązania, instrumentarium i metody pracy z zespołem. �

Sewer Dwellers - Letting No Sin Abide // Composed, Produced, Recorded 🎤

‚Letting No Sin Abide’ was one of those songs that required strong references - this time it was about Middle Eastern themes and the soundtrack to the first ‚Dune’. While producing the vocals, we imagined one scene: a burning city, absolutely massacred by the invaders. This image allowed us to capture a certain atmosphere of horror and drama that we were looking for in Kuba’s performance. The atmosphere is accentuated by a production full of solutions typical for soundtracks. I used powerful and cinematic taiko drums, sitar and brass section, which increases the level of pathos by 200%. The search for suitable samples also led me to instruments that I had not known before, for example Berimbau.

What’s the lesson here? Try to imagine scenes for which the music you produce could be the soundtrack. It helps me to find appropriate solutions, instruments and methods of working with the band.

Mentally Blind - Beyond Me // Kompozycja, Produkcja, Nagranie

Będąc młodym adeptem produkcji raz na jakiś czas napotyka się efekt, który absolutnie wywraca wszystko do góry nogami. Dokładnie tak było ze mną i - Shimmer” Kiedy tylko odpaliłem ten anielski pogłos od razu w mojej głowie pojawiły się setki pomysłów na soundtrackowe melodie przypominające mi o dramatycznych scenach z ulubionych filmów dzieciństwa, a w szczególności tę najsmutniejszą - z Gladiatora. 🗡️ Intro do Beyond Me jest mocno zainspirowane tego typu obrazami, które wykreowały się w mojej głowie.

Z pięknymi pogłosami wiąże się jedno zagrożenie - użyte w nadmiarze potrafią zalać cały mix i sprawić, że wszystko będzie mgliste i nieczytelne. Dlatego polecam wam jedno ćwiczenie: podczas budowania swojej produkcji wyłącz wszystkie pogłosy i zadaj sobie pytanie: czy aranżacja naprawdę ich potrzebuje, czy to być może ja nie mam pomysłu na to jak wypełnić przestrzeń w inny sposób? 🎛️🎸

Mentally Blind - Beyond Me // Composed, Produced, Recorded

As a young production apprentice, you occasionally encounter an effect that becomes a complete gamchanger for you. That’s exactly what happened to me when I discovered „Valhalla - Shimmer.” As soon as I activated that angelic reverb, hundreds of ideas for soundtrack melodies flooded my imagination, reminding me of dramatic scenes from my favorite childhood movies (including the saddest one which comes from ‚Gladiator’ 🗡️). The intro to Beyond Me is heavily inspired by such images that formed in my mind.

Beautiful reverbs come along with one danger - when overused, they can flood the entire mix and make everything blurry and unclear. That’s why I recommend one exercise: when building your production, turn off all reverbs and ask yourself: does the arrangement really need them, or perhaps I just lack ideas on how to fill the space in a different way? 🎛️🎸

Ciekawostka na temat tego kawałka: Kojarzycie grę Doom Ethernal? Na potrzebę tej gry autor soundtraku, stworzył Doom Instrument. Skomplikowane połączenie kilku efektów, które wykorzystuje cyfrowe sprzęgi do wytwarzania bardzo mechanicznego sound designu. W ramach eksperymentu spróbowałem odtworzyć Doom Instrument w środowisku cyfrowym, a efekty pracy tego dziwacznego instrumentu możecie usłyszeć w tłach tego numeru. 👽🎛️🎸

Fun fact about this track: Do you remember the game Doom Eternal? For the needs of this game, the soundtrack’s composer, Mick Gordon, created the Doom Instrument. It’s a complex combination of several effects that use digital circuits to produce a very mechanical sound design. As an experiment, I tried to recreate the Doom Instrument in a digital environment, and you can hear the results my work in the sound design of this track. 👽🎛️🎸

Alphadog - Za Długo // Produkcja, Nagranie, Mix, Mastering 🎛

Ten numer został wyprodukowany w “klasyczny” sposób. Zespół wykonał pracę songwriterską, więc w paczce od Sergiusza i spółki dostałem podstawowe gitary, grające akordy oraz wokale. Wiadomośc od zespołu była bardzo konkretna: chcemy żeby utwór był oparty o gitarę basową. ��W pierwszej chwili możnaby pomyśleć, że ograniczenie ilości gitar w kawałku, który ma kopać doprowadzi do zmniejszenia jego energetyczności, ale co jeśli gitara basowa zabrzmi jak pełnopasmowa gitara elektryczna? Żeby osiągnąć tego typu wrażenie i zachować jednocześnie równomierny dół w kawałku potrzeba jednej rzeczy: Podziału pasma gitary bassowej na dwa. Dół (0-200hz) mocno saturujemy oraz kompresujemy, a górę (200-20khz) przesterowywujemy piecem do gitary oraz poszerzamy efektem Hassa. Voila!

"This track was produced in a “classic” way. The band did all of the songwriting work, so in the package from Sergiusz and his bandmates I received basic guitars, chord sequences and vocal lines. The message from the band was very specific: "We want the song to be based on bass guitar!"At first glance, you might think that limiting the number of guitar parts in a song that is supposed to be aggressive would reduce its energy, but what if the bass guitar sounded like a full-range electric guitar? To achieve this type of sound and at the same time maintain an even low end in the song, you need one thing: dividing the bass guitar signal into two separate parts. The low end (0-200hz) needs to be heavily saturated and compressed while the high end (200hz-20khz) needs to be distorted with a guitar amplifier and then widened with the Hass effect. Voila!"

The Materia - White Walls // Produkcja, Nagranie 🎧🎛

Czasem na etapie pisania płyty zespół przychodzi z takim demo, że od dnia 0 już się wie, że to będzie coś. To uczucie wewnętrznej bliżej nieopisanej ekscytacji już przy pierwszym odsłuchu. Dokładnie tak było z tym kawałkiem.

Podczas produkcji tej płyty i między innymi tego utworu udało mi się przekonać braci Piesiak, żeby tak jak to robią często na koncertach - nagrywali wokale, (również te śpiewane) we dwoje. Zawsze wyczuwałem w The Materia sporo grungeowej energii, a podwójne, zharmonizowane wokale zawsze kojarzyły mi się z Alice in Chains. Nieskromnie mówiąc - uważam, że ten miks sprawdził się tutaj bardzo dobrze. Tadeusz swoim mniej przesterowanym wokalem śpiewa zwrotki, a refreny przejął jego brat Michał.

Morał po raz kolejny jest ten sam. Producent zawsze powinien być uważny na wszystkie talenty i mocne strony członków zespołu i namawiać swoich klientów do tego, żeby je wykorzystywali.

The Materia - White Walls // Produced, Recorded🎧 🎛

While producing this album, and this song in particular, I managed to convince the Piesiak brothers to record their vocals together, just like they often did during their live shows, including the sung parts. I’ve always sensed a lot of grunge energy in The Materia, and harmonized double vocals have always reminded me of Alice in Chains. Honestly speaking, I think this mix worked really well here. Tadeusz, with his less distorted vocals, handles the verses, while his brother Michał takes over the choruses.

The moral remains the same: a producer should always be attentive to the talents and strengths of each band member and encourage their clients to use them to the fullest.

Sour Blood - Dead Stand Up // Mix i Mastering 🎧🎛

Najtrudniejsza część bycia mixerem to moment, w którym wiesz, że żeby zrealizować wizję zespołu i tym samym powalczyć o dobro piosenki potrzebna będzie znienawidzona przez wszystkich rozmowa pt “trzeba to nagrać jeszcze raz”. Dokładnie tak było w przypadku tego numeru. Zadecydowała rzecz prozaiczna - jakość mikrofonu do wokalu. Bardzo lubie, kiedy w takich kryzysowych momentach zespół ma w sobie wolę walki i zwyczajnie zależy mu na tyle, żeby przełknąć gorzką pigułkę i trochę powalczyć, a że Sour Blood to pracowite chłopaki, to cała historia zakończyła się happy endem - wokal brzmi bardzo dobrze, a utwór od lat hula na streamingach.

The hardest part of being a mixer is the moment when you realize that to fulfill the band’s vision and truly serve the song, you have to initiate the dreaded conversation: „We need to re-record this.”
That’s exactly what happened with this track. The deciding factor was something as simple as the quality of the vocal microphone. I really appreciate it when, in such critical moments, a band has the drive and determination to swallow the bitter pill and put in the extra effort. And since Sour Blood are hardworking guys, the story had a happy ending – the vocals sound fantastic, and the track has been thriving on streaming platforms for years.

The Materia - Rosa Alba // Produkcja, Nagranie 🎙️

Rosa Alba to pierwszy numer The Materia, do jakiego dołożyłem swoją produkcję. I cała sprawa pewnie nie byłaby ciekawa gdyby nie to, że pierwszą wersję zrobiłem zupełnie nieproszony. Tadziu wysłał mi ten numer podczas jednej z rozmów, na której wymienialiśmy sie demówkamki Mentally Blind i The Materia. Od razu w głowie zakiełkował mi pomysł na wszystkie tła do ostatniego motywu. Wsiąknąłem w to totalnie, zacząłem pracę i wysłałem swoją wersję Tadeuszowi, a on podzielił ten entuzjazm i long story short zaproponował mi produkcję całej ich płyty. 🎛️💿

Morał dla początkujących producentów: bądź proaktywny. Proponuj współprace artystom, których naprawdę lubisz, czasem nawet za darmo. Jeśli zrobisz dobrą robotę te relacje zaowocują w przyszłości. 🎙️🤝🏻

Rosa Alba is the first song by The Materia, which I produced together with the band. The whole story probably wouldn’t be interesting if it weren’t for the fact that I prepared the first version of the production completely uninvited. Tadziu sent me the song during one of our conversations where we exchanged demos of Mentally Blind and Materia. Immediately the idea for all the backgrounds behind the last motif came to my mind. I started working on the song in excitement and sent my version to him. Tadeusz shared this enthusiasm and eventually asked me to take care of the production for their entire album. 💿🎛️

Moral for producers: be proactive. Offer collaborations to artists you really like, sometimes even for free. If you do a good job, these relationships will bear fruit in the future. 🎙️🤝🏻

Flamingo Flame - “Save Me” // Nagranie 🎙️🎤

Jakiś czas temu wpadłem w rabbithole poszukiwania idealnych mikrofonów do nagrywania wokali. Oczywiście te poszukiwania zawsze kończą się pare/parenaście lat później na kupieniu Sony C800G, najlepiej od razu w komplecie z Tubetechem CL1B. Sam kupiłem parę popularnych modeli średniej półki odrzucając stare przekonania o tym, że absolutnie wszystko da się nagrać na starym dobrym Shure SM7B. I gdzieś w międzyczasie, parę lat od samego nagrania Flamingo Flame wrzuciło do sieci realizowane przeze mnie na SM7B “Save Me”. Pomyślałem wtedy, że brzmi to zaskakująco dobrze i wokalom Filipa Sałapy nie brakuje absolutnie niczego (to oczywiście zasługa również mixu w wykonaniu niezawodnego Marcina Szwajcera). 🎛️��Wtedy zdałem sobię sprawę z rzeczy pozornie oczywistej, ale takiej, o której realizatorzy lubią zapominać. Performance jest znacznie ważniejszy od sprżetu. Kropka.

Flamingo Flame - “Save Me” // Recorded

Some time ago I fell into a rabbit hole of looking for the perfect microphones for recording vocals. Of course, such searches always end a few or even several years later with the purchase of a Sony C800G, preferably together with a Tubetech CL1B. I bought a few popular mid-range models myself, rejecting the old belief that absolutely everything can be recorded with the good old Shure SM7B. In the meantime, a few years after the recording itself, the band Flamingo Flame published the song „Save Me” recorded by me on SM7B. I thought then that it sounded surprisingly good and Filip Sałapa’s vocals lacked absolutely nothing (this was, of course, also thanks to the mix by the unfailing Marcin Szwajcer).

That’s when I realized something seemingly obvious, but something that engineers often like to forget. Performance is much more important than equipment. Period.

In Hell’s Duty - “Whisper Me The End” // Produkcja, Nagranie Gitar i Wokali

Ktoś mądrzejszy ode mnie powiedział kiedyś, że dobre kawałki zapisane w MIDI wyglądają jak fala, która w refrenach wzrasta, a w zwrotkach opada. 🌊

“Whisper Me The End” było pierwszym numerem In Hell’s Duty, do którego realizowałem wokale. Po nagraniu głównej ścieżki refrenowego głosu wokalisty Radka ciągle miałem pewne wrażenie “braku”. To było poczucie, że refren ma zbyt mało energii, nie uwalnia wystarczająco dobrze napięcia, które budują zwrotki. Teraz pewnie pomyślałbym, że znaczy to, że topline jest do poprawy, ale wtedy na całe szczęście dla tego konkretnego kawałka zaczęliśmy szukać ratunku w harmoniach wokalnych. Po nagraniu z Radkiem klasycznej tercji odpowiedź mieliśmy już na tacy - to wyższa harmonia powinna stać się głównym głosem, a dotychczasowy topline harmonią. Fartownie upiekliśmy dwie pieczenie na jednym ogniu: zachowaliśmy charakter starego refrenu i jednocześnie zwiększyliśmy jego energetyke, a cały utwór widziany z lotu ptaka w MIDI przypominał rosnącą i opadającą falę.

In Hell’s Duty - “Whisper Me The End” // Produced, Recorded

Someone wiser than me once said that good tracks written in MIDI look like a wave that rises in the choruses and falls in the verses. 🌊

„Whisper Me The End” was the first track of In Hell’s Duty that we worked on. After recording the main track of the chorus vocals with Radek, I still had this feeling that the chorus was lacking energy and didn’t release the tension of the verses well enough. Nowadays, I’d probably think this means the topline needs improvement, but fortunately for this particular track, we started looking for a solution in vocal harmonies. After recording a classic third, we had the answer right in front of us - the higher harmony should become the main voice, and the previous topline would be the harmony.
Luckily, we managed to kill two birds with one stone: we kept the character of the old chorus and at the same time increased its energy. When you look at the whole track from a bird’s-eye view in MIDI, it looks like a rising and falling wave.

The Materia - “Rising” // Kompozycja, Produkcja, Nagranie

“Rising” to jeden z pierwszych utworów, które powstały na płytę o tym samym tytule. W ramach pracy nad wczesnymi wersjami demo z tego krążka wybraliśmy się z chłopakami do domku letniskowego wypożyczonego nam przez managera BEHEMOTH! . Domek położony był nieopodal lasu w Borach Tucholskich i to właśnie tam gdzieś między wycieczkami rowerowymi i paleniem blantów powstała finalna wersja kompozycji Rising. Naszym największym problemem była druga zwrotka. Pamiętam, że dość mocno walczyłem z Michałem i Tadziem, żeby nie wprowadzać tam dodatkowego riffu. Ostatecznie stanęło na tym, na czym stanąć powinno - zwrotki są inne, ale są wariacjami samych siebie. Wprowadzają nowy element, ale pozostawiają znany już wcześniej temat nie powodując chaosu w kompozycji. Jeśli sam piszesz albo produkujesz polecam Ci jedno ćwiczenie: przeanalizuj swoje ulubione piosenki pod względem ilości pojawiających się w nich tematów. Ile z nich to naprawdę nowe melodie, a ile to tylko pochodne tych, które pojawiły się już wcześniej?

The Materia - Rising // Composed, Produced, Recorded

While working on early versions of the demos for this album, the boys and I went to a summer house rented to us by the manager of Behemoth. The house was located near the Tuchola Forest and it was there, somewhere between bike trips and smoking joints, where the final version of this composition was created. Our biggest challenge was the second verse. I remember that I fought quite hard with Michał and Tadzio not to introduce an additional riff that had not been included in the composition before. It ended up as it should - the verses are different, but at the same time they remain variations of themselves. Each one of them introduces a new element while sticking to the same motif, which allowed us to avoid generating chaos in the context of the entire composition. If you compose or produce on your own, I’d recommend you to do the following exercise: analyze your favorite songs in terms of the motifs. How many riffs or melodies are actually new and how many of them are simply variations?

Alphadog - “Liść” // Produkcja

“Liść” to jeden z utworów z płyty Horyzonty, który trafił do mnie już po nagraniu głównych instrumentów - wokalu, gitar oraz perkusji. Zespół chciał, żebym dołożył do kompozycji pare warstw produkcji. Na drodze poszukiwań rozwiązań, które odróżniłyby utwór od reszty albumu wpadłem na pomysł, żeby w kontrze do reszty kawałków pójść nie całkowicie w syntezatory, a w brzmienia znane z orkiestry: wibrafony, dzwonki i smyczki. 🎻

Dobra rada: podczas produkcji zawsze warto jest szukać elementu, który dodaje utworowi unikatowości, czy to w instrumentarium, czy na przestrzeni samych partii granych przez instrumenty.

Alphadog - “Liść” // Produced

„Liść” is one of the tracks from the album „Horizons” that was sent to me after the main instruments - vocals, guitars, and drums - were recorded. The band wanted me to add a few production layers to the composition. In the search for solutions that would distinguish this track from the rest of the album, I came up with the idea to differentiate it by using a different kind of instruments – not only synthesizers but also sounds known from orchestras: vibraphones, bells, and strings.

Good advice: During production, it’s always worth looking for an element that adds uniqueness to the track, whether it’s in the instrumentation or in the individual parts played by the instruments. 🎻

Mentally Blind - “Decadence” // Kompozycja, Produkcja, Nagranie

Decadence to numer, w którym wiele rzeczy powstało w drodze... pomyłki. Czasem niefortunny missclick i przestawienie motywu potrafi rzucić zupełnie nowe światło na kompozycję. Dokładnie w wyniku takiego przypadku powstał rytmiczny motyw, który słyszycie w 1:52. 🎸

Liczenie na boską interwencję nie zawsze jest jednak najlepszym rozwiązaniem. W aresnale producenta zawsze powinno być parę narzędzi awaryjnych, które pozwolą wyrwać się z pętli postrzegania kompozycji w jedyny słuszny sposób.

Mentally Blind - “Decadence” // Composed, Produced, Recorded

Decadence is a track where many things came to be thanks to...a mistake. Sometimes an unfortunate missclick and a change in the structure of the song can shed a completely new light on the composition. This kind of accident gave birth to the rhythmic riff that you hear at 1:52. 🎸

However, relying on divine intervention is not always the best solution. A producer’s arsenal should always include a few emergency tools that allow breaking free from the loop of perceiving the composition in only one way.
