Wilanów Palace isn’t just a royal residence 👑 — it’s a story.

Built by King Jan III Sobieski, the hero of Vienna ⚔️, it grew from a simple manor into a palace filled with symbols, myths, and power 🏛️✨

Inside, the king becomes Apollo ☀️, the queen becomes Flora 🌸 — together, a vision of a golden age.

Even the gardens follow this idea 🌿📐

Wars came. Time passed.
Wilanów survived 🇵🇱

Warsaw’s Old Town looks centuries old — but it’s actually one of the most remarkable reconstructions in history 🏛️✨

After WWII, it was almost completely destroyed. Instead of leaving ruins or building something modern, experts rebuilt it using original fragments, historic paintings, and detailed records 🧱📜

By the 1960s, a living, breathing city stood again — and in 1980, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site 🌍

📚 Meet Sławek the Eternal Student – Warsaw’s Most Playful Monument! 🎓

If you’ve ever walked past the University of Warsaw Library on Krakowskie Przedmieście, you’ve probably seen Sławek, the bronze student who’s been sitting on his bench since 2003.

He’s more than a statue—he’s Poland’s first monument dedicated to students and the academic spirit of Warsaw University.

In this episode, I explore the fun details and hidden secrets built into this monument by sculptor Andrzej Renes:

✅ A book on how to write your master’s thesis in a weekend
✅ A removable cheat sheet
✅ Latin inscriptions around the bench
✅ A jacket pocket where you can leave messages
✅ And even a hidden smiley face (you’ll need a mirror!)

Fun fact: Sławek’s face was modeled after a real Warsaw University student chosen in a contest.

Next time you’re at Warsaw University, stop by, say hello to Sławek, and see how many secrets you can find. Maybe even leave your own hidden message. 😉

🐉 The Legend of the Warsaw Basilisk

Deep beneath Warsaw’s Old Town, a terrifying creature once lurked in the shadows…

It had the wings of a bat, the tail of a crocodile — and a stare that could turn you to stone. 🪨

Many brave knights tried to kill it. None ever returned.
Until one day, a wandering tailor arrived in Warsaw — armed not with a sword, but with a mirror.

Discover how courage and cleverness defeated the monster that haunted the heart of the city.

🧜‍♀️ The Legend Behind Warsaw’s Mermaid 🛡️⚔️

Have you ever wondered why Warsaw’s mermaid holds a sword and shield, unlike any other mermaid in the world? 🇵🇱✨

Long ago, when Warsaw was just a tiny fishing village, a mermaid swam from the Baltic Sea up the Vistula River 🌊. She fell in love with the beauty of the place and decided to stay. But when she began freeing fish from the fishermen’s nets 🐟, trouble began…

Captured by a greedy merchant 😠 and later rescued by the people of Warsaw ❤️, the mermaid swore to protect the city forever. From that day on, she became the city’s guardian — holding a sword and shield as symbols of courage and gratitude. ⚔️🛡️

This legend isn’t just a fairy tale — it’s a story about bravery, freedom, and the bond between a city and its people. 🌟

🦆✨The Golden Duck of Warsaw

Deep beneath Ostrogski Palace, under what is now the Chopin Museum, lies one of Warsaw’s most magical legends.

A cursed princess — turned into a Golden Duck — guards a hidden treasure. One night, a poor shoemaker named Lutek ventures underground in search of it… and finds more than gold.

💰 A mysterious voice gives him a bag of coins — with one rule:
“Spend it all today, only on yourself.”

What happens when compassion breaks the curse?
This story reveals that true wealth has nothing to do with gold.

📍And next time you’re on Tamka Street, look for the statue of the Golden Duck — a reminder that kindness is the real treasure.

🐦 The Pigeon Lady of Warsaw 🕊️

Kazimiera Majchrzak fed pigeons in Warsaw’s Old Town long before WWII — and even during the war, she sold her belongings to keep feeding them.

After the city’s destruction, she returned to the ruins of Piwna Street, where her pigeons followed her everywhere.

She spent her pension on grain, lived on soup kitchen meals, and became a legend of kindness. ❤️

Look up at 6 Piwna Street — the stone pigeons above the doorway still honor Warsaw’s beloved “Auntie Majchrzak.”

🌍 Did you know the international language of Esperanto was born in Warsaw? 🇵🇱

Its creator, Ludwik Zamenhof, dreamed of uniting humanity through one simple, universal language — a language of hope.

Born in Białystok and later living in Warsaw, Zamenhof believed that language barriers created division. In 1887, he published Lingvo Internacia under the name Dr. Esperanto — meaning “Doctor Hopeful.”

Today, you can still find traces of his story across Warsaw — from Zamenhof Street to his resting place marked with the green Esperanto star in the Jewish Cemetery on Okopowa Street.

🐻 Did you know Warsaw has a Winnie the Pooh Street? 🐝🍯

In 1954, during post-war reconstruction 🏗️, most new streets were named after socialist heroes 🪧. But one newspaper contest 📰✍️ gave Varsovians the chance to choose differently — and they picked… Kubuś Puchatek! 🎉

The name sounds very different from “Winnie the Pooh” 🤔 — and there’s a charming story behind it. Want to know what Kubuś Puchatek really means? 👀📖

🐻🍯

In post-war Warsaw, when most new streets were being named after socialist heroes and political figures, one small street took a very different direction… 🐻...
