Help Dar Al-Kalema rise from ashes
On December 11, 2023, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) set fire to Dar Al-Kalema for Publishing and Distribution. The scorching flames consumed a collection of over 100,000 books and magazines, leaving nothing but scattered ashes in its wake, the collection of which required a quarter of a century of diligent work and continuous effort from its owner and founder, Mr. Atef Al-Durra. In 1999, Al-Durra undertook a mission to launch a cultural project to enable the people of Gaza to access a broader world. He started as a representative for Palestinian publishing houses, study institutions, and research centers to provide their publications to the besieged Gaza Strip despite the ravages of aggression, formidable conditions, and subsequent crises. Despite the difficulties, Al-Durra persisted and continued to advance the project through his personal efforts. Finally, in 2005, he founded Dar Al-Kalema which its current destruction can be equated to the loss of 25% of all publishing houses in the Gaza Strip. This unquestionably reveals "Israel's" vicious intentions to obliterate Palestinian memory and identity, in parallel with the extermination of Palestinians.
Dar Al-Kalema was a beacon of intellectual enlightenment that shone a light in the darkness of the siege and atrocious attacks that tormented the Gaza Strip. Its mission was to publish the works of writers from the Arab world across various fields and to support and encourage Palestinian writers and students specifically. In 2014, Dar Al-Kalema published its first book, and before the outbreak of this ongoing genocide, it had already published around 500 works. Its publications included works by well-known writers, academic journals by university professors, first-time publications by young writers, and pieces written by school students whose work Dar Al-Kalema helped publish. Besides, there were many publications in the pipeline. It also operated as a community cultural center, hosting many initiatives from enthusiastic groups. Like the Palestine Reads Club, a reading club brought together a group of ardent readers who regularly gathered at Dar Al-Kalema to discuss literary works.
Indigenous culture serves as a foundational element in the national liberation movement, actively contesting the constructed narratives of colonial powers. Consequently, Dar Al-Kalema, esteemed as a vital cultural institution, was deliberately targeted on the 66th day of the ongoing slaughter. The "Israeli" death machine that had been wreaking havoc in Palestine decided that burning Dar Al-Kalema was the easiest and quickest way to eradicate it. However, books are more than material objects; they are vessels of unbound ideas waiting to be explored. Each idea is comparable to a bird, free to soar with wings, but those who burn books fail to comprehend this. The burning of Dar Al-Kalema, although not the most brutal tragedy during the ongoing genocide, was undoubtedly an ex*****on of knowledge that can have devastating consequences on the entire society, be it a generation or a whole nation, using ignorance.
Dar Al-Kalema, along with all its books, furniture, and appliances, was reduced to ashes scattered by the wind. Currently, it is nothing but a mere ember amidst a heart of ashes. Yet, we are committed to reviving this cultural edifice once the genocide ends. Still, we cannot do this alone, as we have lost everything and are starting from scratch. ساعد دار الكلمة على النهوض من الرماد
أقدمَت قوات الاحتلال الإسرائيلي في 11 ديسمبر / كانون الأول 2023م على إضرام النار في دار الكلمة للنشر والتوزيع، واندلعت ألسنة اللهب لتلتهم ما يزيد عن 100,000 كتاب ومجلة كانت مصفوفة على رفوفها، فلم يبقَ منها سوى الرماد المثناثر في كل مكان. تلك التي تطلّب جمعها ربع قرن من العمل الدؤوب والجهد المتواصل من صاحبها ومؤسسها السيد عاطف الدرة، حيث ركّز جهوده على إنشاء مشروع ثقافي يشكّل نافذة لأبناء غزة هاشم على عالم متعدد الثقافات، فبدأ مسيرته في العام 1999م وكيلاً لدور نشر فلسطينية ومؤسسات دراسات ومراكز أبحاث يقوم بتوريد إصداراتها إلى القطاع المحاصر، وفي ذات الوقت تابع تطوير المشروع بجهود ذاتية تحت رحى الحروب ووسط ظروف الحصار والأزمات المتلاحقة والتحديات الكبيرة، إلى أن قام بتأسيس دار الكلمة للنشر والتوزيع في العام 2005م، والتي بحرقها وحدها فإن الإحتلال قد دمّر ما نسبته 25% من دور النشر في قطاع غزة.
كانت دار الكلمة منارة يشع نورها فيضيء عتمة الحصار والحرب التي يغرق فيها قطاع غزة. كما وسَعَت إلى نشر وإصدار إنتاجات وإبداعات الكتّاب في العالم العربي في شتى الحقول بشكل عام ودعم وتشجيع الكتاب الوطني والمؤلفين الفلسطينيين بشكل خاص، فمنذ العام 2014م حيث كان أول إصدارات الدار وحتى قبيل إندلاع الإبادة أصبح تعداد إصداراتها حوالي 500 إصدار، تنوعت ما بين إصدارات لكتّاب كبار وشبان مشهود لهم بالمستوى الجيد، وإصدارات أكاديمية لأساتذة جامعات، وإصدارات أولى لأقلام شابة، وإبداعات طلاب مدارس تعاونت دار الكلمة معها لنشر أعمال طلابها، بالإضافة إلى العديد من الإصدارات التي كانت قيد التجهيز للنشر. كما وقد كانت بيت للجميع في الوسط الثقافي كنادي فلسطين تقرأ، وهو نادي قراءة يضم مجموعة من القراء النهمين الذين كانوا يجتمعون بشكل دوري في دار الكلمة لمناقشة الكتب.
ولأن الثقافة مكون من مكونات النضال الوطني الذي ينشر ويدعم الرواية والتراث الفلسطيني ويُجلي الزيف عن الحقيقة فقد طالت آلة الموت والدمار التي استباحت كل شيء في فلسطين دار الكلمة في اليوم 66 للإبادة لتواجه شبح الانتقام فكان الحرق الوسيلة الأسرع لوأدها، كما توهموا؛ فالكتب وعاء لنقل الأفكار، والأفكار لها أجنحة، وهو ما لا يُدركه كل من أقدم على حرق كتاب.
إن محرقة الكتب التي نُفِّذت في دار الكلمة للنشر والتوزيع لم تكن المأساة الأشد قسوة من بين المآسي التي تعرض لها السكان في غزة أثناء حرب الإبادة الشعواء هذه، لكنها كانت إعدام للمعرفة قد يقتل من ورائه جيلاً بأتمّه أو أمّة بأكملها بالجهل، فقد احترقت دار الكلمة عن بكرة أبيها، وتحول كل ما فيها من كتب وأثاث وأجهزة إلى رماد تَذرُوه الرياح، وهي الآن تعيش كجمرة في قلب الرماد.
ولأننا لا نعرف الاستسلام، نخطط الآن لإعادة الحياة لهذه المنارة الثقافية والحضارية فور توقف الإبادة، لكن لا يمكننا القيام بذلك بمفردنا، فنحن نبدأ من الصفر الآن؛ لذلك نطلب دعمكم وتبرعاتكم، لنتمكن من استئناف مزاولة نشاطاتنا وإنتاج المزيد لا لإحراقه بل لقراءته.
