History is being made in Senegal as the Olympic flame arrives in Dakar ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games—the first Olympic sporting event ever held on African soil.

The flame was welcomed with music and dancing before being carried by 100 Senegalese women known as “lingeer,” a Wolof title honoring queens and royal women. Senegalese basketball legend Mame Maty Mbengue later lit the Olympic cauldron.

From Oct. 31 through Nov. 13, about 2,700 athletes ages 15 to 18 will compete in 35 sports across Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. Before the opening ceremony, the flame will travel more than 2,200 miles through all 14 regions of Senegal with over 400 torchbearers—marking a historic moment for Senegal and the entire African continent.
