How many moments like this have shaped my life as a reporter and storyteller.

In the lower third of the image, you can see my friend and colleague Julie Scheier holding the hand of a little girl, while we were interviewing Ethan, one of Gopolang’s photography students.

Moments like these have deeply shaped my journey since 2015. Many times, we were alone in the Townships, and the children’s eyes were simply asking for presence, attention, and comfort.

My “debt” to South Africa is gratitude. I may never be able to improve the lives of many Africans, but they profoundly changed mine.

People Stories was born from that feeling too — to give a voice to many stories that were left untold
