The recommendations we’re sharing today have been selected with those in mind who are currently concerned with the development of their creative business, marketing issues, growth models and public funding for their projects.

The first, “How to Win Work”, is already a classic and, although written from an architectural perspective, is easily applicable to other creative sectors that have to work with both private clients and through competitions.

The second, Do Scale, serves as a slight counterpoint to Paul Jarvis’s “Company of One”, which we recommended in our previous post. However, like everything from “The Do Book Co”, it offers an ethical and sustainable perspective on growth, showing different paths to follow.

Finally, the new book by our friend Francisco Cipriano, which we have been recommending on our social media for a few weeks now, is an essential guide for anyone running a creative business or cultural organisation and seeking European funding for their projects.

Today we're re-sharing the first in a series of posts about our extensive (and ever-growing) book library. By popular demand, we're reviving this series — and it'll be much easier to find the posts here in the feed.

4 years of collaboration with VIC NIC: supporting a “house-project” with many layers and an intense cultural agenda.

Back in 2023, a mutual friend introduced us to musician and cultural promoter Hugo Branco aka and, shortly after, to the ever expanding universe of and VIC NIC records.

What started as a strategy, communication and consultancy project slowly evolved into a bigger collaboration involving visual identities, social media communication, editorial work, campaigns, cultural programming and ongoing support across different platforms and projects.
Over the years we have worked on projects such as BREAK IN CASE OF EMERGENCY and the BREAK Survival Kit, helped shape and coordinate communication across VIC’s channels, and supported initiatives like AMP LIVEMX, festivals and concerts, movie screenings, newsletters and shop-related product releases and many other things happening inside the house.

More recently, we also revisited and adapted the visual system originally developed for BREAK across the two editions of AMP In Loco, exploring the flexibility and longevity of the identity first designed back in 2023.

How we helped the actress Mafalda Lencastre turn her ‘side project’ into a professional venture.

With a career in acting and creative work, Mafalda has always maintained a parallel career as a photographer.

At the end of last year, she asked us for help in structuring this activity as a standalone business. Immediately, a few questions arose:
How to establish a professional practice in a new field? How to make the most of her time throughout the year?
How to break out of her “bubble” and personal network and reach new markets?
How to build loyalty, word-of-mouth and a community in a relatively small market?
How to balance different professional activities and family life?
How to find and reach niches with the financial means and visual culture?

In a short-term strategic programme, we helped lay the foundations of the project.
We defined a value proposition and tailored the offering to three segments: culture (music, stage, behind-the-scenes), families, and businesses and brands.
We then developed the pricing strategy, structured the services, and planned the communication.

Este mês tivemos o privilégio de receber, pela segunda vez em pouco mais de um ano, a visita da nossa querida amiga Dörte de Jesus, fundadora da revista The Lissome.
Durante uma semana, visitámos alguns colegas da rede ECHN na cidade, acolhemos encontros e reuniões e a Dörte aproveitou ainda a oportunidade para encontrar velhos e novos amigos.
Mais para o final da semana organizámos a mesa redonda «From Soil to Story», com a Dörte, a Paula Nabais do Projeto ERC Scarlet e a Margarida e o Pedro da editora Vai Vem. Gravámos e filmámos esta sessão para um episódio do podcast Ossos do Ofício, que será lançado em breve.

Quase 15 anos depois de termos lançado a marca e aberto a primeira loja, a Velo Culture continua a contribuir para um Porto mais bonito e mais humano.

Já passaram mais de 3 anos desde que vendemos o negócio aos nossos amigos Pedro e Bruno, que, com a ajuda preciosa do Edu, continuam a levar por diante a missão e o propósito original desta pequena loja de bicicletas. Agora estamos do outro lado da barricada e somos clientes orgulhosos!

Infelizmente, o Porto ainda tem muito trabalho pela frente. Presidente após presidente, e já vamos no terceiro desde que abrimos a primeira loja, as bicicletas têm estado no discurso político, mas continuamos sem ruas seguras nem estacionamento adequado.

No bairro de Bombarda, o principal centro artístico e cultural da cidade, não temos na rua um único parque para bicicletas, e até encontrar um poste adequado para estacionar é difícil. E se não quisermos atrapalhar os peões, praticamente impossível.

Em 2018, fizemos um editorial para o blogue da Velo Culture sobre Bombarda, ao qual chamámos “Pedalar num mar de carros”.

We brought our community together at for one conversation around food politics, agro-ecology and education.

We traced the journey of food from local producers to the table, and asked a simple but uncomfortable question: what do our food choices really cost?

We invited Snider Rodrigues and Monika Błoch from , Pedro Rocha from O Quinto Elemento , and from Nutrition for Happiness , for a conversation moderated by our dear friend Sofia Ferraz .plantbased from .pt and one of the masterminds of the fabulous .

This event is part of TY-CO, an initiative built around the community, with activities and events running year-round in Nicosia (Cyprus), Porto and Lisbon.
