Magusto, also known as A Festa da Castanha (Chestnut Fest), is an autumnal tradition observed in the Iberian regions of Portugal and Galicia. Rooted in ancient pagan customs, it symbolises the conclusion of the harvest season and the welcoming of winter.

Christianity later integrated this tradition by associating it with São Martinho (St. Martin), the saint known for sharing his cloak with a beggar.

The festivities begin with the preparation of a, initially, small bonfire used for roasting chestnuts. Twigs ,dry pine needles and pine cones are collected and larger bits of wood to feed the fire later on.

The celebration is accompanied by the sharing of red wine, roasted chestnuts, music, and traditional dances around the warmth of the fire.
