🇬🇧 Every year we keep three German Christmas traditions at home:

✨ St. Nikolaus, celebrated on December 6th, when children leave their polished boots out the night before,

✨ Advent calendars, opened every day throughout the Advent season,

✨ and baking Plätzchen, the classic German Christmas cookies we make all December long.

Raising bilingual, bicultural kids means choosing which roots to keep alive, and these traditions bring a little bit of Germany into our home.

Tell me: Do you also keep Christmas traditions from another culture than the place you live?

🇵🇹 Todos os anos mantemos três tradições de Natal alemãs cá em casa:

✨ O St. Nikolaus, celebrado a 6 de dezembro, quando as crianças deixam as botas à porta na noite anterior,

✨ Os calendários do Advento, abertos todos os dias durante o Advento,

✨ e fazer Plätzchen, os biscoitos clássicos alemães que preparamos ao longo de dezembro.

Criar crianças bilingues e biculturais é escolher que raízes queremos preservar, e estas tradições trazem um pouco da Alemanha para o nosso lar.

Digam-me, também mantém tradições de outra cultura diference de onde moram?

🇩🇪 Jedes Jahr behalten wir drei deutsche Weihnachtstraditionen bei uns zu Hause:

✨ Der Nikolaus, gefeiert am 6. Dezember, wenn Kinder ihre geputzten Stiefel am Vorabend rausstellen,

✨ Die Adventskalender, die man jeden Tag in der Adventszeit öffnet,

✨ und Plätzchen backen, die klassischen deutschen Weihnachtskekse, die wir den ganzen Dezember über machen.

Zweisprachige und bikulturelle Kinder zu erziehen bedeutet, bestimmte Wurzeln lebendig zu halten, und diese Traditionen bringen ein Stück Deutschland in unser Zuhause.

Sag mir, behaltet ihr auch Weihnachtstraditionen aus einer anderen Kultur als der, in der ihr lebt?

From the Adventskranz, to Sankt Nikolaus, to the Christmas markets… December really feels magical there. ✨
Even now, living in Portugal, I try to keep a little bit of that German spirit at home.

🇩🇪 Deutschland hat so viele schöne Weihnachtstraditionen.
Vom Adventskranz, über den Nikolaustag, bis zu den Weihnachtsmärkten… der Dezember ist dort wirklich magisch. ✨
Und auch jetzt in Portugal versuche ich, etwas von diesem deutschen Gefühl bei uns zu Hause zu bewahren.

CHILDCARE IN GERMANY, SAME COUNTRY, DIFFERENT RULES 😅

From Frankfurt’s “free Kita after 2” to Heidelberg’s “still paying until school starts,” navigating childcare here can feel like a maze.

In some cities you don’t pay anything, and in others at least around €200 per month. 💸

But wherever we land: raising little ones abroad, that’s real strength. 💛

🇬🇧 Why are German playgrounds so… dangerous?! 😱
That’s what I thought at first, until I learned that risky play isn’t really dangerous.
✅ Big climbing structures
✅ Natural materials like wood & stones
✅ Kids exploring with minimal adult interference
It felt scary to step back, but here’s the thing:
Research shows that risky play helps kids develop motor skills, resilience, and self-confidence (Sandseter, 2009; Brussoni et al., 2015).

So now? I supervise from a distance and trust the process.
Because when kids take risks, they actually learn SAFETY 💪

🇵🇹 Porque é que os parques infantis na Alemanha são tão… perigosos?! 😱
Foi o que pensei no início, até perceber que brincar com risco não é perigoso.
✅ Estruturas grandes para trepar
✅ Materiais naturais, como madeira e pedra
✅ Crianças a explorarem quase sem intervenção dos adultos
Assustava-me não intervir, mas a verdade é que a ciência mostra que brincar com risco melhora as capacidades motoras, a resiliência e a autoconfiança (Sandseter, 2009; Brussoni et al., 2015).

Agora? Supervisiono à distância e confio no processo.
Porque quando as crianças arriscam, aprendem SEGURANÇA 💪

🇩🇪 „Warum sind deutsche Spielplätze so… gefährlich?!“ 😱
Das habe ich am Anfang auch gedacht, bis ich gelernt habe, dass riskantes Spielen nicht gefährlich ist.
✅ Große Kletterstrukturen
✅ Natürliche Materialien wie Holz und Steine
✅ Kinder, die oft ohne viel Erwachseneinfluss spielen
Es war schwer, loszulassen aber Studien zeigen, dass riskantes Spielen Motorik, Resilienz und Selbstvertrauen stärkt (Sandseter, 2009; Brussoni et al., 2015).

Jetzt? Beobachte ich lieber aus der Ferne und vertraue dem Prozess.
Denn wenn Kinder Risiken eingehen, lernen sie SICHERHEIT 💪
