Selling land for a giant Brazil flag

Yeah, that one is wild — and real. During World Cup season, Bangladeshi fans take Brazil loyalty to another level, and selling land for a flag is the peak example.

The story behind it
In 2014, Amjad Hossain, a farmer in Magura, sold a piece of his farmland to help fund a massive German flag he’d been building since 2006. By the 2014 World Cup it was 3.5 km long and cost about 240,000 taka (∼$3,000). He even got recognized by the German Embassy and made a life member of Germany’s official fan club.

Brazil fans do the same kind of thing. In Kuthubpur, local supporters pooled 15,000 taka to make a 500-foot Brazil flag that took 7 days to build and hundreds of people to carry. When you love a team 10,000 miles away that much, “normal” fandom doesn’t cut it.

Why it happens
1. TV history: Bangladesh got hooked on Brazil and Argentina when World Cups started broadcasting live nationwide in 1982. For many, that was their first look at international football. 2. Community identity: Flags, petitions to bring Brazil to Dhaka, and even documentaries by the Brazilian Embassy turn fandom into a shared project. 3. Status symbol: If your neighbor has a 100-foot flag, selling land for a bigger one is the ultimate flex.
It’s not just flags. Fans run fantasy leagues, gaming platforms, and street-wide watch parties. For some, football glory feels more permanent than property.

So when you hear “selling land for a giant Brazil flag,” it’s not a meme — it’s Tuesday in Bangladesh during the World Cup.

The 2023 New Yorker piece really did a number on Hasan Minhaj, and the biggest thing it cost him was The Daily Show. He was basically set to take over after Trevor Noah left. He even told Esquire “We were in talks, and I had the gig, and we were pretty much good to go. It went away. That’s part of showbiz.” For a guy whose whole brand was Patriot Act-level political truth-telling, getting called out for embellishing stories in his stand-up made him too risky for a news desk job. Jon Stewart apparently called him after it happened like “Why the f-ck are they doing this?”

The other cost was trust. A lot of his fans saw him as the smart, angry guy with receipts. When the article said he made up parts of the prom story, FBI surveillance stuff, and the anthrax letter, that image took a hit. He put out a 21 minute video saying the article was “needlessly misleading” and that stand-up isn’t the same as journalism. Some people bought that, some didn’t.

But he didn’t disappear. By 2026 he’s touring again with Ronny Chieng — Hasan Hates Ronny | Ronny Hates Hasan — and playing huge venues like Radio City and Dolby Theatre. He’s leaning back into pure stand-up instead of politics, and still selling tickets. So what did it actually cost him? He lost The Daily Show and that “political truth-teller” reputation, probably took a financial hit for a year or two, but he kept his stand-up career and most of his fanbase. Looks like a comedian can survive a truth scandal, as long as you’re okay not being the news guy anymore.

What do you all think — was the backlash fair or overblown?
