I’m still trying to define the peak of human experience.
Maybe to be content with oneself while sitting by a copper-dark sea, amber radiance from everywhere.

A day in the vineyards of Pico Island, the ‘youngest’ of the Azores archipelago- with its dark landscape of ‘mistérios’ - black lava fields, dragon trees (the largest forest in the world) and photogenic windmills.

Captured here the bright red Moinho do Frade, viewpoint to the highest peak in Portugal, the Piquinho, at 2351 meters of altitude- always crowned by a laurel of thick cloud

To feel so alive, barefoot on the black sand, shades of moss, stone-rust and deep oceanic blue
to know the pictures you took will be tinged with the nostalgia of having been there in a nameless moment in time- but I am here and I am her, and it’s summer
And every summer is a gift, summer is golden ⭐️

Summer in the Azores - my shots here on Terceira, a lush green gem of an island.

Coastal views from rocky shores to rugged cliffs,
the emerald patchwork of pastures, blue hortensia-lined roads and glistening natural pools in a dramatic setting of dark basaltic rock.

You follow a nature trail and end up in a mystical forest, a small church rising from the mist. Or you walk up to a Miradouro- a viewpoint- and you’re instantly rewarded with endless sights of the fertile volcanic landscape and the roaring waves of the Atlantic.

Azores, you have my heart 💚💙
finding the “Palestina Viva” sign in Angra do Heroismo, the capital of Terceira and UNESCO World Heritage site, made me love its people even more!

You have to embrace the possibility of getting exactly what you hoped for, and more. Otherwise you’ll stay consumed by the fear that everything might change- or the fear that everything will stay the same 💫

The trick is to infuse every memory with meaning.

Pick a street, pick a hill to climb- catch a glimpse of sunset over the rooftops and then, once the ‘gold rush’ is gone, take your time with the Blue Hour before the relative darkness descends over the city.

There’s a comfort in holding a camera, like holding a secret to something only you can see. How much light enters the lens at dusk, is it enough to illuminate a life?

I play the same game now as a traveler going through town as I did as a child- I try to imagine a short story behind each house window that comes to life with a silhouette or two in the dim glow of a lamp, or just watching strangers on the street hurrying somewhere. So many lives, so many stories, infinitely branching out. And you, the outsider, confined to observing, like a ghost. Lisbon, the Blue Hour.

The fact that I still post my favorite pictures and sunsets on here is an indication of hope - there’s still so much good and beauty in the world but somehow you have to travel further and further to find it.

Despite these online platforms being all neutrals/esthetic beige and artificial construct- social media but minus the “social” aspect. Let’s act like everything’s alright in the world, let’s not get controversial, let’s play it safe.

We love to swim in shallow waters and are afraid of the deep.
We consume and don’t even realize we are consumed.

Just like little dopamine-searching machines, mesmerized minions of the global marketplace, perplexed when asked to boycott companies and stop filling the pockets of giant corporations that fund wars on the innocent. “But I need it!”
And yet we watch people being starved on purpose and we sit front-row on our screens watching the real Hunger Games.

We know by now that on a personal level you never get away with anything in life, the Universe spins the block and it all comes back; do you ever think how will that work out on a global level ? On which scale we are facing payback? For allowing injustice to thrive like an invasive species?
Living on borrowed time and accumulating debt-
towards what it means to be a good human.

You finally put the luggage down- no it is not too heavy, and the way to get here wasn’t too long.
You should rest but you feel too excited to sleep. The view from your hotel room is just that: an invitation to dive in.

All the euphoric joy you poured in getting here is mirrored back to you. A golden luminescence in every corner. Now you’re not just passing time, like catching a ride somewhere in the passenger seat while it’s not even in the direction you wanted to go…You are harnessing time and giving it real meaning.

You worry an unnamed knot from the past will find you on a beautiful cobblestone street in the Old Town in the middle of a sunny day.
But nothing is here to haunt you, because everything around is brand new. No strange memories to cast a shadow, because you’re making them now as you walk along.
And you realize that everything you feel is pretty much a shared human experience, we all have the same hopes, fears and desires, we’re made of the same thoughts. How ultimately life is to be seen pretty with a little hurt like a feather pulled from a living wing.

Today I want to draw you a metaphor about world polarity.

Know that there are people out there who are passionate birdwatchers. They can literally sit for hours in silence marveling at a beautifully winged species just doing her ‘bird things’. And they take so much joy from it. Today was a fine day, they’ll say after a few successful sightings.

Then you have painters, photographers, people who pursue a creative outlet to give meaning to the mundane.
People who take pleasure in baking, decorating cakes, cooking at a soup kitchen, feeding others. People who see a piece of fabric and turn it into a wonderful dress. People who write poetry as therapy for their soul. People who read to the elderly or the bedridden.

But I always go back to the birdwatchers: the patience that involves, the delicate pleasure of it. The human quality of appreciating God’s creation: from a distance, harmlessly, in awe.

And then you have people who voluntarily sign up for an army to go kill, maim other people, destroy their homes and livelihood, and taking a sick pleasure from it, celebrating death and destruction. People who steal rightful owners land and generational homes.
How do you look at the world through this lens now? How can these two sides of man coexist?

I was’t sure whether to post this as my birthday this year came in such unfair times.

I had my cake and enjoyed the love of my family and my close ones. A quiet celebration.

The more you grow the more your birthdays become occasions to self-reflect: like advancing through the levels of a videogame, with each passing year you unlock a new ‘superpower’ within. That’s why I’m grateful for aging, for becoming a better version of me. Thank you all ❤️
