Bored in Timișoara?
Time to try something different.
Let’s explore the EuroVelo 13 Iron Curtain Trail.

Timiș County — Part II.

From quiet villages in Banat to the city that sparked the Romanian Revolution, this is our ride towards Timișoara.

We left Jimbolia and headed toward Timișoara, but not before exploring a few hidden gems along the way.

Passing through Cenei, we had to stop for a moment to admire the beautiful Banat architecture and the village’s impressive Catholic church.

Next came Bobda, where we discovered the former beauty of the Csávossy family mausoleum. Here we also found a hidden gem: a beautiful mural close to the mausoleum.

Heading toward Timișoara, you can choose the shorter route through Săcălaz, with a bit more traffic, or take the slightly longer road through Sânmihaiu German, following the Bega River into the city.

In Timișoara, the traces of the Iron Curtain are still preserved. The first city liberated from the communist regime has countless stories waiting to be discovered.

At the Communist Consumer Museum, everyday objects tell the story of life during the era and bring a different period of Romanian history back to life.

We also visited the Memorial of the Revolution, dedicated to the events of December 1989 and the people who fought for freedom in the city where the Romanian Revolution began.

EuroVelo 13 isn’t just a cycling route — it’s a ride through history.

We had an amazing time documenting this trip, met wonderful people along the way, and we highly recommend exploring this part of Romania by bike.

Bored in Timișoara?
Time to try something new,
Let’s explore EuroVelo 13 Iron Curtain Trail

This time we explored Timiș County:

From a mammoth in Serbia to hidden border towns in Banat, this is our bike journey across history.

We started in Kikinda, where we visited
one of the best-preserved mammoth skeletons
in Europe.

From there, we crossed the border to Romania.

Lunga is the only linear village in Banat.
During the communist period, it became a symbolic “road to freedom,” where people risked their lives to escape across the Iron Curtain.

Next, we rode through Comloșu Mare, where we took a short break in the park next to a beautiful church
and a nearby historic manor.

Our next stop was Lenauheim, the birthplace of Nikolaus Lenau, one of the most important lyric poets
of Austrian Romanticism. You can also visit his memorial house here.

After a few photo stops along the way, we arrived in Jimbolia and explored the rich history
of this small border town.

Jimbolia was founded in 1766 during the Habsburg era as Hatzfeld.
Built by German settlers, it grew into an important railway and industrial town, later becoming part of Romania in 1924.
Today, it’s known for its multicultural heritage
and strong Banat spirit.

Together with our guide, we visited the Sever Bocu Press Museum, the only press museum in Romania,
with thousands of historic newspapers and magazines.

We also stopped at the Florian Firefighters’ Museum,
which tells the story of the town’s emergency services
and local history.

At the railway station, we learned more about Jimbolia’s multicultural and sometimes turbulent past from our guide.
