Since we started TravelArte, we’ve met hundreds of people. Around tables, in villages, estates and guesthouses, at events and on research trips. We’ve had countless conversations about what we do and how we do it.
This summer, one question came up surprisingly often: 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲?
We visit many places, meet many people and explore lots of ideas. We are curious by nature so we want to see and understand as much as we can. Only a few eventually find their way into the journeys we create.
Our process matters as much as the outcome, but there isn’t really a simple checklist. There is, however, a way we look at a place and, just as importantly, a way we choose to share it.
We try to resist both extremes: romanticising Transylvania into a timeless fairy tale or reducing it to a set of tourist attractions. 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧:
• 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 - we look at what survives, who cares for it and why it matters today.
• 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 - we avoid treating them as scenery frozen in time; they are living communities.
• 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 - the landscape is part of daily life and cultural history, not just a view.
• 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - for us, they are living knowledge, carried forward by people.
• 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - we care about research, patience and honesty in the use of materials over cosmetic perfection.
• 𝐆𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 - we love connecting food to season, local producers, memory, place and technique.
• 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚 - we do not allow the cliché to define our journeys. When we started, we even wondered whether we should consider it at all. We accept it as part of the mythology, but not as the definition of our destinations.
We started this project by sharing Transylvania as we see it.
Today, we create experiences for international travellers, brands and communities. We love designing them for those who travel differently.
