Address by the Ambassador of Italy, H.E. Laura Aghilarre, to mark the National Day of the Italian Republic, 2 June:

"Dear readers of Nine O’Clock, it is a great honour to address you on the celebration of the Italian Republic, which takes place on the 2nd of June in commemoration of the Referendum held on the 2nd of June 1946, in the aftermath of the Second World War. That Referendum founded the Italian Republic and it was the first time that women could vote. 80 years have passed since then. 80 years of continuous commitment to democratic values and principles at both a national and international level.

I, as Ambassador of Italy to Romania, am honored to commemorate this historic event that is also a reflection of the values that both Italy and Romania share: individual liberty, social and political equality, the Rule of Law and the protection of human rights.

The relations between our two nations have only continued to strengthen over recent years. We have seen this with the 2024 Intergovernmental Summit which took place in Rome and the signing of the Joint Political Declaration. In the very same year Bucharest welcomed an official visit from the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. Since then, several meetings between the two Ministers of Foreign Affairs have taken place as well as high level consultations that confirmed the alignment of the two countries on bilateral and international affairs. This can be seen in both nations support of the defense of Ukraine’s sovereignty and of the enlargement of the European Union. I would also like to stress Italy and Romania’s shared commitment to contributing to the defense of the Atlantic Alliance. As a concrete demonstration of this commitment, particularly towards the security of the Eastern Flank, Italy has led several NATO Enhanced Air Policing missions in Romania, the latest in 2025...."
