Dear friends and neighbors.
As some of you may already know, I’ve decided to run for the second term on the Board of Education (BOE). I am writing this post as a private citizen and candidate, not in my capacity as a current BOE member.
I’d like to share what I’ve learned during my three years on the BOE, but first, I would like to address a video posted Springfield residents page, which has gotten 4K views.
In this video, I spoke about bureaucratic organizations, which I compared to bacteria. These organizations spread themselves from school to school, collect money from local and federal government (our taxpayers’ money) while contributing nothing to education. In fact, they create destruction and confusion. In this case, they are targeting specifically middle schools. Unfortunately, my speech didn’t come out exactly the way I wanted to due to multiple interruptions by another board member and it was hard to speak after that.
With that being said, I hope I was able to get my point across. I would like to thank the person who posted this video – what was once unseen has been seen by 4K people.
As for the organization which was mentioned (GSA), it entered our middle school for the low cost of $1,000. It was originally in two middle schools in Union County and has since expanded to eight middle schools in Union County…spreading…
Now, back to the main point. When we begin our term on the BOE, we take an oath to the Constitution and to the people. While our primary focus is, of course, the children and their future, we achieve this through following our constitution, listening to the community that elected us, and protecting their rights. This genius American system of self-governance, which other countries don’t have, continues to impress me. Unfortunately, the operations of BOE aren’t always clear to everyone, so I would like to clarify a few things:
1. The BOE doesn’t run the schools – the Superintendent does. Many decisions made by the Superintendent are beyond our direct control. We can ask questions and try to influence her decisions, but we don’t have the authority to micromanage.
2. Our meetings are public, but not designed to have a dialog. That is why sometimes we don’t say anything. If you would like to engage with us in conversation, consider requesting a town hall-style meeting where we can respond to questions on the spot.
3. The primary functions of BOE are:
a. Policy making
b. Hiring, firing and evaluating the superintendent
c. Budget oversight
d. Curriculum approval
e. Safety and security
f. Contract negotiations
Communication is vital. Please e-mail us or, even better, attend our meetings to address your school-related concerns or share what goes well for you.
Lastly, I will not be holding or participating in any events. However, if you’d like to meet or have a phone conversation, feel free to DM me and we will arrange.
