: Families that once laughed, now only remembered”: GAERG documents over 15,000 Families wiped out in Genocide Against the Tutsi

More than 15,000 Rwandan families were completely wiped out during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, according to the Rwandan Graduates Genocide Survivors Organization (GAERG).

The organization has identified 15,593 families, comprising 68,871 individuals, who left behind no descendants.

In Rwanda, such a family is defined by the total erasure of both people and property, parents, children, and relatives killed, with homes destroyed and history nearly lost.

GAERG has been leading a national effort to document these families, not merely as statistics, but as human stories deserving dignity, remembrance, and honor.

Through its projects, GAERG restores the identity of those who were nearly forgotten.

These initiatives serve as a powerful reminder that remembering is not just a duty but also a call to protect humanity as Rwanda commemorates 31 years since the Genocide against the Tutsi.

The President called on Rwandans to stand firm and self-reliant: “To Rwandans, I beg you, don’t owe your life to anybody else.”

He emphasized that the genocide would never happen again, not because perpetrators won’t try, but because “there are people who will stand up and fight.”

President Kagame takes a swipe at DRC’s Tshisekedi

In a recent interview with Mario Nawfal, Rwandan President Paul Kagame openly criticized Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi, questioning his leadership and expressing frustration over the ongoing tensions between the two nations.

When asked about his message to Tshisekedi, Kagame remarked:
"I would tell him I wish he wasn't president of that good country."

This statement underscores the deepening rift between Rwanda and the DRC, primarily fueled by accusations surrounding the M23 rebel group. The DRC government claims Rwanda is backing the rebels, a charge Kigali has consistently denied.

The conflict has led to severe humanitarian crises, with M23 rebels recently capturing strategic areas, displacing thousands of civilians.

International efforts to mediate the conflict have faced hurdles. During a recent African Union summit, little progress was made toward resolving the tensions, with Rwanda refusing to bow to international pressure, Kagame stating that Rwanda’s sovereignty would not be compromised.

Regional leaders, meanwhile, have demanded direct talks and ceasefires between the M23 rebels and the DRC government. Though the tone has recently changed, President Tshisekedi is still claiming that the rebels are looting Congo's abundant mineral resources. The talks are scheduled to begin in Luanda, Angola, on March 18, 2025.

: AID IS WEAPONISED: PRESIDENT KAGAME

In a recent interview with Mario Nawfal, President Paul Kagame discussed Rwanda's evolution away from relying heavily on foreign aid.

He noted, "Aid can be a liability if not managed well. We appreciate it, but we want to build our capacity to stand on our own."

Kagame also recounted conversations with other leaders where rejecting aid under certain conditions led to criticism: "We’ve been called arrogant or insensitive... but we believe aid creates dependency and can control our lives."

He emphasized that aid is often "politically weaponized," used as a tool for influence and control over recipient nations.

His stance sheds light on Rwanda's commitment to self-sufficiency and the dangers of external control, advocating for a more responsible approach to international support.

Suspends Development Cooperation with Belgium

Kigali, Tuesday, February 18, 2025 – The Rwandan government has suspended its development cooperation with Belgium, citing Belgium’s political interference and actions aimed at undermining Rwanda’s access to development finance.

The government outlined the following key reasons for its decision:

Belgium’s Aggressive Campaign Against Rwanda – Rwanda accuses Belgium, alongside the DRC, of leading a campaign to block Rwanda’s access to development finance, including within multilateral institutions.

Belgium’s Political Decision to Choose Sides – Rwanda states that Belgium has taken a political stance in the DRC conflict rather than supporting neutrality and mediation.

Use of Development Finance as a Political Tool – Rwanda argues that no country’s development finance should be jeopardized as a means of leverage.

Interference with the African-led Mediation Process – Rwanda sees Belgium’s actions as external interference that undermines the AU/EAC/SADC mediation efforts.

Punitive, One-Sided Measures Have Failed Before – Rwanda argues that such measures have historically worsened conflicts instead of resolving them.

Rwanda’s Refusal to Be Blackmailed on National Security – The statement makes it clear that Rwanda will not compromise its security, borders, or stance against violent ethnic extremism.

Failure of the International Community and DRC Government – Rwanda criticizes both for failing to dismantle the FDLR militia and protect minority rights, which continue fueling conflict.

Call for Mutual Respect in Development Partnerships – Rwanda insists that all partnerships must be based on respect, accountability, and non-interference.

This suspension comes a few days after Rwandan President told Jeune Afrique Publications that he is not afraid of "So called western sanctions".
