:MISS RWANDA 2020 NAOMIE NISHIMWE, WHO HAS SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF CYBERBULLYING ON MENTAL HEALTH, IS SET TO RELEASE A BOOK IN NOVEMBER 2025 THAT CHRONICLES HER JOURNEY AND ADVOCATES FOR STRONGER PROTECTION OF YOUNG PEOPLE.

When Nishimwe Naomie was crowned Miss Rwanda in 2020, she thought it would be one of the happiest chapters of her life. Instead, what she expected to be a moment of celebration became the beginning of an unforeseen struggle. Almost overnight, she found herself the target of online attacks, strangers commenting on her body, her hair, her academics, and even her character. What was once a dream quickly turned into a battle with cyberbullying, leaving her feeling isolated, silenced, and weighed down by false stories that people freely spread about her.
Naomie recalls how those words didn’t just disappear into the digital space. They followed her into real life, shaping the way people saw her and even affecting her career opportunities. She explains that unlike physical abuse, which often happens within smaller circles, cyberbullying spreads everywhere.
A single cruel comment made in Kigali could echo across Musanze within seconds, giving strangers the illusion that they knew her personally. This kind of harassment, she points out, doesn’t just sting in the moment it lingers, gnawing at mental health and pushing many young people into depression, substance abuse, or even suicidal thoughts.

Determined not to let her crown define her story, Naomie chose courage over silence. She decided to reclaim her voice and use her platform to speak out against the harm of online harassment. Her upcoming book, More Than a Crown, set for release in November 2025, captures this journey of resilience. In it, she not only shares her own experiences but also advocates for change, urging parents to listen to their children, schools to prepare teachers to recognize trauma, and authorities to hold perpetrators accountable.

Above all, she calls on young people to remember that behind every username is a real person with feelings. For Naomie, protecting Rwanda’s youth online is not optional t’s urgent, and the time to act is now.

: Families that once laughed, now only remembered”: GAERG documents over 15,000 Families wiped out in Genocide Against the Tutsi

More than 15,000 Rwandan families were completely wiped out during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, according to the Rwandan Graduates Genocide Survivors Organization (GAERG).

The organization has identified 15,593 families, comprising 68,871 individuals, who left behind no descendants.

In Rwanda, such a family is defined by the total erasure of both people and property, parents, children, and relatives killed, with homes destroyed and history nearly lost.

GAERG has been leading a national effort to document these families, not merely as statistics, but as human stories deserving dignity, remembrance, and honor.

Through its projects, GAERG restores the identity of those who were nearly forgotten.

These initiatives serve as a powerful reminder that remembering is not just a duty but also a call to protect humanity as Rwanda commemorates 31 years since the Genocide against the Tutsi.
