Valérie Osouf, a filmmaker and journalist, began her career in Senegal, where she directed her debut film "No Comment, the country one never reaches" in 1996, a documentary addressing the impact of immigration laws. She pursued a master's degree in journalism and engaged in cultural work for press and radio in Dakar. Returning to Paris, she explored themes related to colonial history, attending La Fémis for scriptwriting.
In 2008, Osouf co-directed "Cameroon: Autopsy of an Independence," a historical documentary that received acclaim. Her 2012 documentary, "National Identity," critically analyzed republican universalism and the double penalty, gaining recognition at international festivals. She continued her work with films like "Afterwards," addressing Alzheimer's and the Algerian war.
Osouf co-founded Granit Films, producing documentaries and collaborating with renowned filmmakers. In 2016-2017, she directed "Sissako, Beyond Territories," exploring filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako's life and cinema. Osouf is currently developing "After Babel," an international documentary on human mobility.
Beyond filmmaking, Osouf is involved in education; She has taught documentary cinema at the Beijing Film Academy, participates in film committees, and curating film cycles. She joined the School of Mutants artists' collective and exhibited internationally. In November 2024, she is set to shoot a nocturnal urban motorbike film in Kigali, showcasing her continued dedication to diverse creative endeavors.
