🌞 Prince Rahim Aga Khan ⚡ Lights the Future of Hunza – Launches Duiker Phase II and Nasirabad Solar Power Plants 🔋☀️
On this day, June 8, 2024, Prince Rahim Aga Khan visited Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, to inaugurate two major solar energy projects: Duiker Phase II and Nasirabad Solar Power Plant, with a combined capacity of 3.6 MWp.
The first phase of the Duiker Solar Power Plant started operations in November 2023. It increased electricity availability for over 11,000 people — from 10 to 17 hours in summer and from 4 to 9 hours in winter.
When completed in November 2024, Duiker Phase II will increase the plant’s power generation from 1MWp to 1.6MWp, and battery storage from 0.6MWh to 1MWh, benefiting an additional 8,760 people. Most importantly, it will help reduce approximately 1,100 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually by replacing diesel generation.
Alongside this, a new 2MWp Solar Power Plant with 1MWh battery storage is also being built in Nasirabad, Lower Hunza. It is expected to be operational by June 2025, providing clean electricity to 23,400 more people.
These projects are being spearheaded by NPAK Energy Ltd, a subsidiary of Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), which is the industrial and infrastructure development arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED). The investment includes $6 million from AKFED and an additional $14 million from development partners.
Over the next five years, NPAK Energy aims to expand clean and sustainable energy projects throughout Hunza and neighboring regions. These efforts will address energy shortages, create economic opportunities, and support climate change mitigation — establishing a model of innovative and efficient public-private partnership in Pakistan.
