1️⃣ Disciplining them in private
Avoid embarrassing them in front of others.
2️⃣ Let them answer for themselves when someone asks them a question
Allow them to speak instead of answering on their behalf.
3️⃣ Give them opportunities to make decisions
Offer age-appropriate choices like what to wear or what game to play, even if their choice differs from yours or takes longer.
4️⃣ Apologize when you make mistakes
Saying “I’m sorry” teaches respect and accountability.
5️⃣ Allow them to say NO or express disagreement
Respect their boundaries and teach them it’s okay to assert themselves respectfully.
6️⃣ Thank them and show appreciation
Kids deserve gratitude too.
7️⃣ Keep your promises
Not just “maybe” or “we’ll see” without following through. When you can’t keep a promise, explain honestly rather than leaving them wondering.
To raise a respectful child, it begins with showing them respect so they can see what it looks like in action and understand what respect feels like.
When we listen to them, speak kindly, and honor their boundaries, we’re teaching them how to treat others and build strong, trusting relationships.
Kids learn by watching us, so the way we interact with them makes a lasting impact.
