Anthropic rejected a US government deal because it refused to remove its ethical "red lines" prohibiting the use of its AI for mass domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons .

The dispute began when the Pentagon demanded Anthropic allow "all lawful purposes" use of its Claude models without restrictions . Anthropic's CEO Dario Amodei held firm, stating the company "cannot in good conscience" enable technology that could conduct surveillance on Americans or deploy lethal weapons without human involvement .

When given a 5:01 PM deadline to comply, Anthropic stood by its principles . The Trump administration responded by ordering all federal agencies to cease using Anthropic products and designating the company a "supply chain risk" a label never before applied to an American firm . Defense Secretary Hegseth declared that "America's warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech" .

Anthropic plans to challenge the designation in court, arguing it is "legally unsound" and sets a dangerous precedent for any company negotiating safeguards with the government . The company maintains it remains willing to work with the Pentagon, but only within its ethical boundaries .
