Celebrating another certificate!

Heartfelt thanks to the University of the Philippines Open University for providing a platform that empowers Filipinos to learn anywhere, anytime. Your commitment to accessible quality education is truly transformative, and I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to grow and learn through your programs!

ICT is BOON and BANE

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is a double-edged sword, offering both benefits and drawbacks in the realm of education. On one hand, ICT facilitates efficient, effective, and interactive learning, enabling students to access high-quality curriculum materials anywhere and anytime. It enhances problem-solving and critical thinking skills, allows for observable time-lapse photography, and provides microscopic insights into phenomena like plant growth and bacterial life. ICT also promotes creative thinking, supports knowledge construction, and encourages learning by doing.

On the other hand, ICT has its downsides. The misuse of social media can lead to character assassination, while excessive texting and TV consumption can be detrimental to productivity. Some learners may use ICT for unethical purposes, such as accessing po*******hy. Moreover, the passive nature of TV consumption can turn learners into mere spectators, hindering their ability to develop critical thinking and social skills. Overreliance on computer-aided instruction (CAI) can also impede learners' ability to relate to others.

In conclusion, ICT is neither solely a boon nor a bane. Its value lies in how it is utilized. When harnessed effectively, ICT can revolutionize learning, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. However, when misused, it can have negative consequences. Therefore, it is essential to strike a balance and ensure that ICT is used judiciously to maximize its benefits while minimizing its drawbacks.

Lessons from Leaves and Learners

Just as tender shoots require nurturing to flourish, so do young minds. Like plants, students need careful attention, patience, and guidance to grow.

I find solace in watching both thrive under my care. With plants, I learn to appreciate the subtle signs of growth, and similarly, with students, I witness the gradual unfolding of their potential.

Both teach me the value of persistence, adaptability, and the importance of providing the right environment for development. As I tend to my plants, I'm reminded of the delicate balance between support and autonomy that students need to reach their full potential.

In both, I find joy in the process of nurturing and watching growth, and I'm constantly inspired by the unique beauty and strengths each one brings.

“Yes, you're right! I'm a plant mom to hundreds of green babies here in Riyadh!"

Celebrating a Milestone

I am thrilled to share that I have successfully obtained a certification in “Understanding the Child Better” from the esteemed University of the Philippines Open University. This comprehensive course has been a transformative experience, equipping me with the knowledge and skills to better support children in vulnerable situations.

Key Takeaways

The course provided a systematic approach to identifying signs of risk and vulnerability in children, along with effective intervention strategies. I gained valuable insights into the diverse challenges faced by children from various communities, including those with special needs. The program also emphasized the importance of collaboration between government agencies and private organizations in ensuring the success of initiatives aimed at supporting children’s well-being.

Theoretical Foundations

A highlight of the course was the exploration of prominent behaviorists, theorists, and psychologists who have significantly contributed to our understanding of human behavior and development. This knowledge has enhanced my ability to approach child development from a holistic and informed perspective.

Appreciation

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the University of the Philippines Open University for providing a platform for Filipinos to access high-quality education and professional development opportunities. This certification is a testament to the university’s commitment to empowering individuals and communities through education.

6Cs in CCSS

The 4Cs in CCSS - Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity - are essential skills for 21st-century learners. To ensure these skills are developed, I incorporate activities that make learning fun while aligning with the CCSS objectives. The two primary goals of CCSS are to prepare students for higher education and equip them with the necessary skills for the real world.

To achieve this, I include group activities in my weekly tasks, which foster Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity. These activities also provide opportunities for students to present their work, boosting their confidence in expressing themselves in front of an audience. By harnessing the 4Cs, we also target the development of CHARACTER, aiming to produce productive CITIZENS.

The Power of Patience: Overcoming Reading Challenges in the Classroom

The horror story of an ELA teacher is discovering that almost half of her students aren't reading at grade level. The big question is: how do you bridge the large learning gap?

Reading plays a vital role in learning, regardless of the discipline. The challenge is following a curriculum while scaffolding for students who are behind according to grade-level standards. You can end up puzzled and clueless about where to begin and how to deliver the necessary standards by the end of the school year. Teachers need a lot of techniques to juggle this challenging situation.

What did I do? How did I help my beginner reader students become grade-level readers? Patience, determination, and multitasking! Here's what worked:

1. Daily 10-minute reading time
2. A reading corner to motivate students
3. A designated librarian with a reading log
4. A functioning library corner with books brought in by students
5. Assessing reading levels at the beginning of the year
6. Reading interventions based on student’s level
7. Providing reading remediation during homeroom or lunch breaks
8. Pairing advanced readers with beginner readers ("Big Sister" program)

This approach not only helped my beginner readers but also empowered my advanced readers by teaching them responsibility and leadership skills. By making reading a routine, I helped my students become independent readers.

FUN LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Engaging Young Minds: A Game-Based Approach to Learning

As a teacher, I always strive to innovate my methods to keep my students engaged and excited about learning. Motivation is crucial in elementary education, and research shows that children's attention spans are getting shorter. Therefore, it's essential for educators like myself to think creatively about how to make lessons more engaging and worthwhile.

My students are always eager to find out what activity comes next, and this enthusiasm makes it easier for me to achieve my teaching objectives. One innovative approach I've implemented is incorporating the XO board game into our quiz bee competition. Here's how it works: teams compete to answer questions correctly, and upon success, they earn the opportunity to play the XO board game. Each question is presented on the smartboard, and the team that answers correctly gets to play. The winning team is announced once they've completed the pattern.

This approach leverages game-based learning, fostering engagement, teamwork, and healthy competition. By linking academic achievement to gameplay, students are encouraged to think critically and strategize effectively, enhancing their overall learning experience.
