A new European Union food safety regulation is expected to affect about 97 percent of Pacific Island-flagged fishing vessels currently approved to export seafood to the EU.

Officials from Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu recently completed a two-week technical training in Suva to prepare for the requirements under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/1449, which came into force on 27 January 2026.

Minister for Environment, Climate Change, Disaster and Meteorology Hon. Wayne Osopo Ghemu today reaffirmed Solomon Islands' full support for the Weather Ready Pacific programme.

"This is not just another overseas project. This is a Pacific plan, made by Pacific people, to protect Pacific lives," he said at the third Steering Committee Meeting in Honiara.

"If Weather Ready Pacific can serve our people in the villages and islands, then it will always have a home here in Honiara."

He said the new weather radar under construction near Honiara International Airport provides better severe weather warnings, professional training for Solomon Islands Meteorological Service officers is underway, and Starlink kits have been deployed to remote areas for early warning and disaster response connectivity.

"In our island country, where the ocean and distance make communication hard, a good connection saves lives during cyclones, floods and disasters," he said.

Minister Ghemu said equipment and training alone are not enough โ€” what is needed are systems the national meteorological service can own and maintain, reaching every province.

"Weather Ready Pacific must not be a programme people only hear about in Honiara meeting rooms. It must be felt in our villages, schools, churches, markets, harbours and homes."

The Minister thanked SPREP, WMO and development partners, and urged delegates to strengthen governance, set clear priorities, avoid duplication, and keep communities at the centre of decisions.

"Let us keep working as one Pacific family. The success of this programme will be measured by one thing: whether our people are safer because of the decisions we make."
