HONIARA, Solomon Islands – In a major coup for Pacific football, Solomon Kings FC have secured highly-regarded Australian-English coach Ben Cahn as their head coach for the inaugural OFC Pro-League season set to kick off next year.
The announcement marks a significant step in the professionalisation of the club as it prepares to compete on Oceania’s newest and most prestigious stage.
Cahn, 36, brings a reputation for a dynamic, high-energy, and possession-based philosophy, along with a track record of rapid success at clubs in Australia and, most recently, Japan. His appointment signals ambitious intent from the Solomon Islands franchise.
A Promising Career, A New Challenge
Cahn’s coaching journey began after injuries curtailed his playing career. He quickly made his mark in Australia, first at the Central Coast Mariners Academy and later at Olympic FC in Queensland, where he led the team to five consecutive National Premier Leagues (NPL) Grand Finals.
His most notable achievements came at Melbourne Knights in 2023, where he guided the club to the NPL Victoria finals and a stunning Australia Cup semi-final appearance, earning the NPL Victoria Coach of the Year award. After a brief stint as Head Coach of A-League side Brisbane Roar earlier this year, Cahn departed for health reasons, successfully undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.
His most recent role was as head coach of Japanese club FC Tiamo Hirakata, announced just last December. His move to the Solomon Kings represents a new and exciting chapter for both coach and club.
Strategic Partnership Announced
In a related development, Solomon Kings FC have also revealed a strategic partnership with Australian club Wynnum Wolves FC to aid their preparations. This alliance is viewed as a crucial component of the club's professional growth, providing access to high-level training facilities, logistical support, and competitive preparation ahead of the Pro-League.
A Call to the Nation
With Cahn at the helm and a strategic partnership in place, the stage is set for the Kings’ historic campaign. The club is issuing a rallying cry to the nation's football fans.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Solomon Islands football," a club spokesperson stated. "We encourage every football fan in the country to jump on board and support Ben and the team as we embark on this incredible journey. Together, we can make history."
The OFC Pro-League, featuring professional and semi-professional clubs from across Oceania, aims to elevate the standard and commercial appeal of football in the region. All eyes will now be on Cahn and the Solomon Kings as they build towards their debut.
