Three candidates have officially been nominated to contest the election for the next Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands following the close of nominations at 12:00pm today, Sunday 10 May 2026.
According to the official notice released after the close of nominations, the candidates are Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka, Hon. Manasseh Maelanga and Hon. Matthew Cooper Wale.
The notice confirmed that all nominations were submitted before the official midday deadline.
Central Guadalcanal MP, Peter Shanel Agovakaโs nomination was received at 10:28am. He was nominated by Hon. Paul Popora Bosawai, Hon. Jaimie Lency Vokia, Hon. Rexon Annex Ramofafia and Hon. Freda AB Tuki Soriacoma.
East Malaita MP, Manasseh Maelangaโs nomination was received at 10:35am and was backed by Hon. Clezy Rore, Hon. Francis M Belande Sade, Hon. Morris Toiraena and Hon. Daniel Waneoroa.
Meanwhile, Hon. Matthew Cooper Waleโs nomination was received at 11:15am with support from Hon. Rick Nelson Houenipwela, Hon. Franklyn Derek Wasi, Hon. George Temahua and Hon. Lazarus Alfred Rina.
The Prime Ministerial election is expected to take place in Parliament on Friday 15th May, following the successful motion of no confidence that removed former Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele from office.
Political camps are now expected to intensify lobbying efforts as the three candidates seek enough support from Members of Parliament to form the next government.
