Opposition Leader Matthew Wale has blasted the GNUT government’s handling of sufferance wharves, calling its decision “erratic” and a sign of weak leadership.

He said the reshuffle and rapid reversal of policy raise serious questions about external influence and transparency.

Wale insists the wharves must remain closed until the special committee’s review is complete and clear policy direction is set.

Former Finance Minister Harry Kuma raised the alarm that sufferance wharves in Honiara were illegal, environmentally non-compliant, and a security risk to international trade.

In a memo to Customs, Kuma said the wharves lacked proper approvals, violated the Environment Act, and failed international ISPS standards.

Days later, he was abruptly removed, and his suspension order on the wharves was overturned by his successor.

Pacific youths have called on Forum leaders to turn promises into action, demanding climate justice, peace, and stronger investments in education, jobs, and mental health.

Youth representative Josie Anne Ashley told leaders in Honiara that the Blue Pacific Ocean of Peace Declaration must become “a living anchor” against rising seas, nuclear dumping, and external pressures.
