A new report warns that Australia may be unprepared to respond effectively if a crisis over Taiwan escalates.

Experts say the government is not collaborating enough with businesses or the Taiwanese community at home to detect early signs of tension.

Listening to the Taiwanese diaspora and improving communication is seen as crucial to preventing Australia from only recognising a crisis once itโ€™s too late.

by Tom Wark of AAPin Canberra Without clearer communication and listening to the Taiwanese community at home, Australia might only recognise a crisis with China once it is too late.โ€ฆ

A Chinese-chartered vessel, MV Hua Sheng 1, has been detained by the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Maritime Unit for breaching its beche-de-mer license conditions in Rennell and Bellona waters.

The vessel, operating under an arrangement with the Rennell and Bellona Provincial Government, was found harvesting reef fish during their spawning period.

Authorities say the arrest underscores the governmentโ€™s crackdown on illegal and unsustainable fishing practices within Solomon Islandsโ€™ Exclusive Economic Zone.

The FFA-led Operation Kurukuru 2025 has recorded 126 vessel inspections across Pacific waters, marking another successful regional maritime surveillance effort.

The three-week operation identified 11 high-risk vessels, with one vessel of interest spotted and later apprehended in Solomon Islands for suspected offences.

The Forum Fisheries Agency says the results highlight the regionโ€™s growing capability to detect and deter illegal fishing through coordinated monitoring and enforcement.

๐Ÿ“ In our latest investigation, we explore how the people of Wagina rely on the ocean for their livelihoods, but rising seas, climate change, and mining runoff from the nearby Siruka nickel mine are threatening the islandโ€™s thriving seaweed farmsโ€”the largest in the South Pacific.

From destroyed crops to toxic sediments, this is a story of resilience, community, and the fight to keep their watersโ€”and their futureโ€”safe.

๐Ÿ’ฅ โ€œIt was like a volcano erupting,โ€ recalls a witness of last nightโ€™s Town Ground bomb explosion in West Honiara.

Lawyer Alex Hiro, who stood just metres from the blast, described the terrifying moment an unexploded World War II bomb detonated near the old Sol-Lanka shop.

Police have confirmed one person is injured and are urging the public to avoid lighting fires or digging in unknown areas around Honiara.

Community leaders from Naha have completed leadership training to promote inclusive healthcare ahead of the opening of the new $250 million Naha Birthing and Urban Health Centre next year.

The training, supported by Australia, focused on empowering local leaders to ensure the new facility benefits all community members, including the elderly, widows, and people with disabilities.

Acting Australian High Commissioner Andrew Schloeffel said the initiative combines quality infrastructure with strong local leadership to deliver inclusive, community-driven health outcomes.

Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) has raised serious concerns over the Royal Solomon Islands Police Forceโ€™s repeated claims of vehicle shortages, calling it a symptom of deeper accountability and management failures.

Despite receiving regular vehicle donations from Australia and China since 2022, police mobility and response remain limited, affecting the justice systemโ€™s ability to function effectively.

TSI says the RSIPF must demonstrate transparency in how donated resources are used to restore public trust and ensure justice for all Solomon Islanders.
