Fanatastic work to help end the stigma behind periods 👏🏽

We are so proud of Anvi, who has been hard at work creating boxes full of period products to help raise awareness of Period Poverty and fight the stigma associated with periods. She is part of a team of young women working on the GDST's programme in partnership with LSE Generate creating a social enterprise and donating profits to Bloody Good Period!

Functional Neurological Disorder.
Have you heard of this condition?

Let’s think of our brains as computers we have the hardware (the brain and spine chord) and the software (the way the nervous system works). FND is where there is dysfunction in the software of the nervous system. This can cause an array of symptoms including seizures, tremors, sleep problems, IBS and lack of concentration.

What causes or triggers PTSD?

* serious accidents

* physical or sexual assault

* exposure to traumatic events at work, including remote exposure

* serious health problems, such as being admitted to intensive care

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Stigma behind mental health/illness is strong. Those with PTSD are stereotypically shown as dangerous, unpredictable and incompetent people. These traits being shown in the media mean it is hard for those suffering to reach out when they need help

How can we reduce this stigma?

Roughly 59 countries have passed laws against FGM, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Spain, Norway,  Sweden and New Zealand.

However, there are some countries including Mali, Liberia and Sierra Leone which have no known law preventing the practise of FGM.

Multiple laws have been proposed banning the practice, most recently when a law was drafted to address gender based violence. However, in countries where over 70% of men and woman believe in the practise, attempts to ban FGM have been opposed.

Is this correct? Should young girls have their fate decided before they are old enough to know better? Should we not all have control over our own bodies?

This week we will be talking about Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM). By definition this is a ritual in where external female ge***alia is partially or completely removed. FGM is most common in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

FGM can cause severe bleeding, urination problems, issues with childbirth as well as various psychological issues.

FGM is a violation of human rights of girls and women. Let’s talk about it.

Good morning everyone!
We are still talking about colourism and the effect it can have on you.

Let’s get thinking!

Have you ever wished for a different skin tone? Wish it was lighter or darker? Have you ever used a skin lightening cream? Why do you think being lighter is associated with a higher level of beauty?

These ideas are so damaging to people. It reduces their self worth and self esteem.

Reminder: every shade, every colour is beautiful. Let’s not discriminate or hate✨💛

“Dark skin is not a crime; light skin is not a prize”

In the world we live in it is so hard to accept yourself. There’s always a physical feature of ours which is not ‘good enough’ to be accepted by society. How do we learn to love ourselves?

Colourism is the idea of racism against skin tone within a community. We already face so much backlash from other races, why do we not support each other? Let’s learn to lift each other up ✨

Colourism by definition is the prejudice or discrimination against individuals with a dark skin tone, typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group.

Have you ever experienced this? Have you been told your skin colour needs to change to be worthy?

“Once you label me, you negate me”

This pandemic has caused a lot stress and anxiety for all. In these situations it is easier to blame others rather than accept your own emotions. A lack of understanding of a certain topic can lead to a stigma.

Our blog this week will further discuss racism during pandemics.
